(some folks like Sabine Hazan — who's admittedly far on the extreme edge of "away from evidence-based medicine" — basically describe Long COVID from a gut perspective as "a disease caused by a lack of bifidobacteria")

Extremely interesting. I'm surprised they didn't find a meaningful difference in bifidobacteria levels, given some folks hypothesize low bifido is a key driver of Long COVID symptoms.

(of course, the relationship between ME/CFS and LC is complex and muddy, but)
1) 🇵🇱 A new study from Poland reports that ME/CFS patients have a different gut microbial composition than healthy controls.

The authors found a higher relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and a lower level of Firmicutes, consistent with previous papers.

Genomic studies in bifidobacteria often focus only on CAZymes. IMHO, in Gram-positives, transporters are the true gatekeepers of glycan metabolism. We need to prioritize improving their functional annotations and include them in metabolic reconstructions (7/7)

It’s been a bit over 2 months since the main results of my PhD work on reconstructing carbohydrate utilization pathways in human bifidobacteria were finally published; so I guess it’s a good time to update the previous thread (1/7) www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Study of 53 healthy adults over 12 weeks: keto (<8% carbs) increased LDL cholesterol & apoB and reduced Bifidobacteria, despite fat loss.

Low-sugar diet lowered LDL with no gut harm. Keto may have trade-offs.

Critical finding for carriers:
Middle age (45-65) = peak protective bacteria
Lactobacillus & Bifidobacteria lower in APOE4+
But MIND diet can change this trajectory
