This year we collected 4.7 lb. of balsamroot seed. On Saturday, we started planting it in the burn area of the Burdoin Fire. The area has a lot of damage but will recover.

Lone Mountain Hill above Lone Mountain Cemetary is very much alive in April. All those Arrowleaf Baslamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata) reaching for the sun, shading the lupine, and hosting the spiders.

Sideview of a yellow wildflower of the sunflower family. From wikipedia: The leaves are compound pinnate, with the leaflet divisions also divided or deeply lobed. Basal leaves are hairy and may be up to 16 inches (41 cm) long. There may be one to several stems, which are leafless and hairy, and topped by one flower each. It blooms from April to July. Flower heads are 1 to 3 inches (2.5 to 7.6 cm) wide, and sunflower-like, with 10–21 fringe-tipped ray flowers and numerous disc flowers. The flower bract has long hairs.

The Labor Mountain Fire grew significantly with the high winds yesterday, jumping Hwy 97 towards Tronsen Ridge. This is a beautiful area with a large population of the rare Tweedys Lewisia. Hopefully dormancy, their large taproot, and preference for rocky growing conditions will protect them. 🌱

The Shrubby Penstemon is so lush and tall up there. Arrowleaf Balsamroot plants are huge. The Lewisia is not present on the ridge here but on the steep western slope.

I grew up in the interior of B.C., and balsamroot is everywhere. No one called it that, or its actual name Balsamorhiza. It's all sunflowers.
