Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart and his Magic band its brilliant madness, its confidence in its own nature, its reminder that strangeness is of this world, rooted to the earth here and now, repeals the mandate of the academy’s ownership of the avant garde, I sure am pretentious sometimes
I saw a Beefheart tribute show years ago where Genesis P’Orridge told their story of hearing Trout Mask Replica the first time from another room while lying sick on acid immobile on their friend’s kitchen floor and thinking the friend was trying to kill them.

At the beginning! I think listening to their material in order (maybe up to the millennium or early 2000s) says the most. They went from the danceable fusion funk to avant garde over the course of the 90s. You can hear them go from groove oriented to very improvisational in that time frame.
