This is the energy usage from last year.

We sized it in such a way that it covers a reasonable proportion of the ASHP for the winter. Won’t ever be 100%.

A bit of solar to top it up during the day.

Majority of the year we can sell something back to the grid

Forced hot water has the system loop temperature issues you mentioned.

Ducted Central Air is the best option but the most expensive.

Mini splits are sort of my "give up on trying to make it good" option.

And this is before thinking about ashp vs gshp!

Denver got solar, a battery ashp and EV
January 14, 2026 at 4:44 PM
lets remeber as gas usage for electricity declines then it's main usage will be domestic heating and strangely places int he high mountains use ASHP, GSHP etc and not gas like my one and in UK far too many people over wamr their homes

These are top 7 (last 30 days) ASHP heat pumps (CH + DHW) that report room temperature - last 24 hours view

ASHP?
January 8, 2026 at 2:52 PM
it is Glyn because I am as green as most people (EV, ASHP no carbon energy ) but I like to travel, it si good for people to travel but as green as possible, we can not be asolutionist in this ...

During the ASHP 2025, EAHP had the chance to engage in meaningful exchanges on hospital pharmacy practices worldwide.

Can I ask a question; Have you posted the story of the change of ASHP? I’d be fascinated to know what went wrong, when you realised it was badly installed and so on.
January 8, 2026 at 7:16 AM
I’ve been looking at my data since ASHP install at the start of October. It has looked worthwhile until the last week. Definitely want to wait until I can see a full heating season comparison.

Passivhaus home here. Two bathroom towel rails running off ASHP HW cylinder at 50C, supplemented by 3 hours of A2A mini split heat pump running at night, plus some free heating from sun ☀️ during daytime. Staying between 19-21C
January 7, 2026 at 9:54 AM
Looking at the cost over the year, we get the standard signoidal curve. The tails of the year are more expensive - as you would expect given the ASHP is running more, lights are on more, etc. It'll be interesting to see how this changes with PV/batteries in 2026.
January 7, 2026 at 9:17 AM
Which from the looks of things would mean we'd be able to offset at least 88% of our total energy usage into the cheaper/greener hours. Obviously this also doesn't factor in generation from the solar, but it gives us confidence we can reduce the ASHP heating costs significantly.
January 7, 2026 at 9:17 AM
Which if you look at the breakdown of days with average temperatures needing heating, the bulk of these sit within the middle of the ASHP output range. So it's never really working flat out for the bulk of the year, but also thankfully isn't oversized like the pervious one this replaced.
January 7, 2026 at 9:17 AM
Across the year you can see that actually the 5 kW ASHP is very well matched to our heat loss which comes in at just short of 5 kW.

With longer cold periods and defrosts, it can affect the house by about half a degree, but nothing too horrible. Most of the year it purrs away nicely.
January 7, 2026 at 9:17 AM
Across the year the ASHP performed amazingly, averaging a total SCOP for 2025 of 4.47, which can be broken down into:
Heating COP - 5.11
DHW COP - 3.31

I'm very happy with that efficiency which when eventually coupled with PV and batteries should bills will reduce considerably.
January 7, 2026 at 9:17 AM
So let's dig into some of the data I have generated on the house. For information, we are a 2 person household, 135 sq m, 1950s semi. We have an EV (MG4), an ASHP (5kW Vaillant) but no solar or batteries (yet).

This year our electricity consumption was £1767. So very close to @ofgem.gov.uk average
January 7, 2026 at 9:17 AM
So now that my @octopus.energy bill for December has come in, I can crunch the numbers and understand how our replacement ASHP has performed over the past year. Last December the massively oversized & poorly fitted ASHP was removed & our local @heat-geek.bsky.social trained installer replaced it.
January 7, 2026 at 9:17 AM
Mine doesn't record them but I glance at the control panel sometimes, it's been high 30s/low 40s.

Outside temps around freezing, house next door is being rebuilt so we have an external wall that was not designed as an external wall so we've turned the 'stat up to 22 to counter that. ASHP.
January 7, 2026 at 9:03 AM
#ASHP performance over the past 7 days:

Average outside temp: 2C (-4.4C to + 6.9C)
Average flow temp: 29.5C
Total Electricity used: 150kWh
Average hourly use: 0.9kWh

To me this seems pretty good! On Octopus Cosy and not running the heatpump 24/7 to avoid the more expensive hours.. 1/2 #heatpump

I assume you had space for a 200l water tank and no upgrades to pipe work and radiators. Average cost to install AS Heat Pump (ASHP): £7,000 – £13,000 Average cost to install Gas boiler £3,000 to £5,000. I am not against ASHP but they not the answer for everyone. BTW you can’t go back to gas.
