on historicity, in a text-to-text fiction
'not strict accuracy, but an authenticity of approach that aims to situate the story in the thematic space of its inspirations... which also strikingly evokes medieval works in feel, in way often distinctly absent from modern retellings, even of Arthuriana.'
Today at @nerdsofafeather.bsky.social I reviewed The Wolf and his King by Finn Longman. It's a gorgeously prosey retelling of Bisclavret, and one that feels deeply embedded in the stories of its 12th century inspiration.
Book Review: The Wolf and His King by Finn Longman
Second person present tense is the sexiest way to tell a story. If you've not come across it before, Bisclavret is a 12th century poem, one ...

A couple of days too late for the solstice and a day early for Christmas, but listening to Amal El-Mohtar's reading of Winter Solstice, Camelot Station by John M. Ford. A good bit of Arthuriana for the season.

As someone who did a literature degree that movie very much feels like what reading Arthuriana feels like. Just. Fucking weird.

Me, browsing tumblr during the resurrection of Merlin (BBC) obsession - ooh a post about old Arthuriana shows, WAIT WHAT?

LAWHEAD'S PENDRAGON SERIES FOR TV?!

Hamlet has a lot more to do with Early Modern England than it does with Medieval Denmark. Many forms of Arthuriana have more to do with the era of composition than ostensible time periods, etc

The more I read/watch other Arthuriana the more I understand why Gwaine in BBC Merlin is introduced with the sort of dramatics reserved for Marvel movie cameos of a character from a comic that was discontinued 50 years prior.

"Cursed" by Thomas Wheeler

- This ended up being a YA tale with characters having Arthurian names rather than being an Arthuriana story.
- The book feels unfinished, as I find the ending lacking in any storytelling coherence and just going for impact. And so many plots just up in the air.

Do you know what drew me to discovering the works of arthuriana both historical and modern? An exhibit in my home town on the pre-raphelites fixation on arthurian legends. It was Art. Beautiful and Colourful, but certainly not historicaly accurate, Art.

pokemon and arthuriana follow the exact same plot and interpersonal structures.

in fact i can only assume that each knight having four concisely-named attacks would only make each story better.

Valerin the Fair by @riengray.bsky.social

This is probably the most capital E, capital A Erotic Art book I've ever read. It's the first in a series of "sapphic Arthuriana", and it very much has the feel of mythology.

Mom got me some more shelves for Christmas, so I'm in process of rearranging. I also finally have a little book nook with some Arthuriana stuff.
