So happy to see this AMR-related story from our 3-way collaboration!! Huge congrats to Alison + team, and thanks to @oxmartinschool.bsky.social for making it possible. Basic idea: deep "learning" ribosome distributions after antibiotic treatment rapidly classifies cells as resistant or not.
Our work on rapid detection of antibiotic resistant and susceptible cells using ribosome phenotypes is out today! We used fluorescent imaging and changes in bacterial structure to classify single cells with high accuracy.

Hand washing for anything related to food or caring for the sick (and pregnant) is undoubtedly the simplest technology that would have had the greatest impact. Innumerable lives saved.
I wanted to say penicillin, but that's damn complex plus who wants antibiotic resistance to start back then.

Related to the work of the new antibiotic I really like the work of the phage.directory/about that works to curate a database of phages and what bacteria they infect, because phages are one of our best "back up plans" for bacteria

There’s some interesting evidence that suggests in humans and mice that post-antibiotic use of probiotics can delay gut recovery. And, autologous (self-sourced) fecal microbiota transplants are a more effective treatment to 1) recover gut microbe community and 2) repair mucosal gut lining.

How often are throat-related illnesses treatable with an antibiotic? If you don’t have strep, it’s pointless and counterproductive, no? https://twitter.com/Scaramucci/status/1285621141386809346

it was still worth it for the peace of mind that shes ok, just old, but boy howdy my household has had years taken off of our lives worrying about her.

As a long-time tinnitus sufferer, I am somewhat skeptical. Some tinnitus is referred from neck or head trauma, but some is antibiotic-induced or related to nerve damage that is, in effect irreparable.
Mine has proven to be such.

If they wanna create a good healthcare related national registry, we should be keeping national tally of antibiotic prescriptions and how they tracks with the epidemiological analysis of antibiotic resistance. But that’s not useful for eugenics like this is.
