look, there’s a lot going on here, but also I don’t think there’s an amount of money you could pay me to share personal parenting anecdotes on the internet.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Countless counterfeit fallacy:

An increasing number of anecdotes doesn’t strengthen the quality of evidence.

Many people can be wrong.

in the end, no one is gonna remember "player stories" and "and then this happened" shit. they're anecdotes. but a character written with intent, voiced with intent, directed with intent? that's the shit that persists through generations, man. how lame do you have to be to want to actively avoid that

It wasn’t planning dates and going “oh I guess we can’t go to bars”? Hearing anecdotes about high school? Telling her she was just so mature and such an old soul so clearly it was ok for her to be with someone twice her age? Figuring out how to dodge awkward conversations with her parents?

🎵 Logged on to twitter, who do I see posting good (?) takes and mean anecdotes? Joyce Carol Oates. 🎵

One of the all-time great Hollywood anecdotes.

In its own way it’s kind of fun how you can watch the half-remembered anecdotes and poorly recalled one page summaries rattle around in his head. It’s like watching an LLM do something that makes the QA team panic.
Trump says that HBCUs would be "all be out of business" if fewer Chinese students were allowed to go to American universities

As a Jesuit who will be single for life, I really enjoy when my long-time friends get married.

It means that I can tell the same jokes and funny anecdotes I've been telling for years because they're new to their partner AND I can watch my older friend roll their eyes in exasperation.

One mental pitfall of news-via-social-media is collecting anecdotes from everywhere and getting the mental impression they’re all happening in the same place at once. (Cf “migrant crime” for an example of this that pretty much everyone reading will agree is erroneous.)

So: +

This story is relatable because it is about how hard it is to find a good audience for your zany childhood anecdotes
www.tumblr.com/biblicallyac...
Related: I remember telling stories about my childhood to my therapist and her just staring at me through the Zoom call with a thousand yard look in her eyes and then just slowly shaking her head when I said I had a typical childhood

Gorgonize [GOR-guh-nahyz]

Used in a sentence:
"The Egyptology professor gorgonized his students with amusing riddles and captivating anecdotes of the ancient kingdoms.”

Thanksgiving is next week so it’s time for one of my favorite anecdotes:

Kid 2 went on a field trip where they saw turkeys at a farm. They come home and are telling their brother about their day as I’m in the kitchen loading the dishwasher. I hear fighting so I go out to see what’s going on 🧵

My favorite two anecdotes about Napoleon Bonaparte:
a) Ludwig van Beethoven had initially composed his third symphony in honor of Napoleon. Upon hearing the news that Bonaparte had crowned himself emperor, he immediately crossed out the dedication. (1/2)
'Woke' Napoleon never becomes dictator, let alone emperor, and probably remakes Europe far more thoroughly as a result.

On top of everything else, he completely shat on what could've been an *amazing*, legendary legacy continuing his earlier career.

All he had to do was preserve the Republic.
If you don’t think Woke Napoleon would have been awesome you have no heart
If you don’t think Woke Napoleon is an impossible contradiction in terms you have no brain

Interesting image considering this man sat and listened to one of the greatest Jeopardy-related anecdotes to ever be spoken at the bottom of a well. Or maybe... his identical twin brother listened to it? One of them. My point is... What is Ukraine?

New York Times had a revolving door with Epstein, and many interviews involved anecdotes involving the age of his companions! If you wanna earn extra credit, check out any and all coverage of how editorial at NYT tolerated Kurt Eichenwald buying CSA for a story!
So uh... how many high profile journalists were buddies with Epstein? I'm concerned that the number seems larger than 0.

Jaw dropping anecdotes in the piece that put colour on the China shock

“A Munich-based compressor maker has two offers for a new wire-processing machine. A quote from a Swiss-based European company stands at €130k, compared with one from a firm based in China’s Zhejiang province for less than €28k”

let's fucking gooooooooooo. sign up now to converse with three minutes worth of information on your dead loved one, interspersed with made-up anecdotes inserted by an AI before the data centre is shut down with zero notice after 7 months. yes yes yes!!!!
Nightmarish idea for a startup tbh

I was thinking about strat hoarding in speedrunning recently and wrote up some thoughts. If you've got anecdotes, I want to hear them pastebin.com/D89QudiB

This is so good: a friend and I are trading anecdotes from it about velvet trousers, topless sunbathing and compulsory simultaneous orgasms
I am loving @jasonburke2.bsky.social’s new book. It’s superb, especially on the absurdity of some of the Europeans involved.

Back in my day, the bare minimum expected of our Business Leaders was "haphazardly repeat anecdotes from Malcolm Gladwell airport books"... society is collapsing

If we make it to adulthood, we usually have some bits of personal mythology we've constructed around ourselves. One of my main interests in recent years has been to try and shake off all of mine, to stop believing it, repeating it, or caring about it.
To be a person without anecdotes.
