Leaning out of the car, five men in brown hooded robes defend the car from a tentacled horror with one large eyeball using a variety of firearms and forbidden tomes. In the background, a cowled figure glowers down on the scene intently, its nearly-mummified skin giving the impression of great age and eldritch power; its upturned hand reaches out for the car as if to crush it should the passengers challenge its sinister plans.

[371] Farnsworth Wright to August Derleth, 13 July 1931, WHS THE HORROR FROM THE LAKE is obviously inspired by Long’s story, THE HORROR FROM THE HILLS, and some of the early scenes in your story parallel Long’s. This in itself would be sufficient objection to bar the 10 story from Weird Tales. Also, your story does not have the distinction of style which is one of the charms of Long’s story.2 But a more serious objection to this story is the fact that you have lifted whole phrases from Lovecraft’s works, as for instance: “the frightful Necronomicon of the mad Arab Abdul Alhazred,” “the sunken kingdom of R’lyeh,” 15 “the accursed spawn of Cthulhu,” “the frozen and shunned Plateau of Leng,” etc. Also you have taken the legends of Cthulhu and the Ancient Ones directly out of Lovecraft. This is unfair to Lovecraft. Robert Louis Stevenson once said that in the days of his apprenticeship to the writing craft he “had played the sedulous ape” to different authors in turn. But you have not merely aped 20 Lovecraft in this story—you have even lifted his wording. My admiration for Lovecraft’s writing amounts almost to idolatry, and I cannot allow such imitation in Weird Tales. It is all right to use the legends as Howard and Smith have used them—a mere allusion to them; but your usage oversteps the bounds of propriety.

Thought I’d go back to when Alhazred was writing the original manuscript. Here he’s guided (or perhaps controlled) by tendrils from beyond as he draws a glyph.
You can see an arm, and hand (holding a quill) drawing a symbol on a manuscript. The drawing is mostly black & white, while the tentacles, or tendrils, wrapped around the arm and hand are green.
