SO GOOD: "this only shows that researchers are in a vulnerable position and that the genAI industry can and does exploit it. GenAI is not empowering researchers but cementing their precarious roles." #resistAI #againstAI
Andrea Reyes Elizondo @altibel.bsky.social and I have responded to a blog, recently published on @leidenmadtrics.bsky.social, which argued that using AI responsibly in research means being transparent about it. We object that supposed transparency obscures more fundamental ethical questions.
Why AI transparency is not enough
Recently, a taxonomy to disclose the use of generative AI (genAI) in research outputs was presented as an approach that creates transparency and thereby supports responsible genAI use. In this post we...

Update: they've stopped coming again.

The maximum day July 7-Aug 21 was 889 visitors (except Aug 20: 3378); the low day Aug 22-Sept 30 was 687, and it never fell below 3000 between Sept 2-27. Since Oct 1, the max day has been 687.

All such stats are faked, because Google, but. #againstAI

Support artists directly. If you stream, buy an LP or CD, T-shirt, book/graphic novel, subscribe. Don't let the artists you enjoy toil without just compensation while streaming companies and AI companies disproportionately profit off of their creativity! #AgainstAI #StreamingDoesntPay #Art #Music

Presented without comm... Who am I kidding, STOP USING FAKE AI WHEN THE HUMAN BRAIN IS RIGHT THERE WAITING FOR YOU TO NOTICE IT. #againstAI (Not shouting at the OP, I promise.)
If you leverage AI in literature review, CHECK THOSE REFERENCES. I just finished reading through a proposal on a topic that I knew well, and thus was surprised to see several papers referenced that I hadn't known of. Then when I looked them up online, I found they didn't exist. 7 fake references.

A useful thread, that also flags the various stages at which resistance is essential, everywhere. #noAI #againstAI (Yes, not all AI, whatever.)
OpenAI's rapid rush into education has been achieved by habituating users through training programs, institutional lock-ins, strategic marketing partnerships, and third party integrations that together are helping it become infrastructural to teaching and learning. It's going to be hard to get out.

Terrific thread for everyone worried about AI/LLMs #againstAI
LLMs are nothing more than models of the distribution of the word forms in their training data, with weights modified by post-training to produce somewhat different distributions. Unless your use case requires a model of a distribution of word forms in text, indeed, they suck and aren't useful.
There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.

I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.

Thoughts?

Let's be clear: LLM-style AI is trash, irredeemable trash, the only possible use of which is for experts to produce trash they can then sift expertly and hence **maybe** speed up their expert actions. No one else should touch it, and I'd rather no one touched it. #noAI #againstAI 2/
