The Zhuangzi
Hey #AcademicSky and #Medsky 🩺🧪

What book do you wish someone had given you as a first year undergrad? Or did someone give you that was pivotal for you?

(Or should it always be @bcdreyer.social’s English or Tufte’s Visual Display of Quantitative Info?)

Starting this right after Zhuāngzǐ and WOW the Mahāyāna Buddhist vibes are SO DIFFERENT from the Daoist world I was in for a year...

I’m back in this book. It is so wild to read Chinese nationalists in the early 20th century advocating for western Aristotelian rationality because they felt that their own Chinese traditions lacked the philosophical rigor of the West. But, like, I just read Zhuangzi and it was amazing??

there's a Zhuang for that

@consume.red Zhuangzi mentioned in the title of the film, in the dialogue of the scene in the thumbnail, and in the butterfly drawing also shown here :)

Every day the world conspires to drive you mad and you must choose whether to fight against that (Rawls, maybe?), or embrace it (Zhuangzi)

"Erkenntnis läßt sich nicht von anderen lernen.
Erkenntnis muß aus dem eigenen Ich hervorgehen."
Zhuangzi

Ob Herr Merz jemals zur Erkenntnis gelangt, ist leider stark anzuzweifeln. #Stadtbild

Und damit einen guten Morgen und einen angenehmen Start in den Dienstag!

huizi spoke to zhuangzi, saying, "the king of wei gave me the seed of a big conker. i unboxed it, like it was nature's labubu. not that it wasn't hugely big, but it wasn't useful, so i destroyed it."

zhuangzi said, "you, master, are certainly clumsy when it comes to unboxing nature's labubu."

Dr. Kitagawa, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, has carried out his research while keeping in mind the concept of “the usefulness of uselessness” from the ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi. Although he is a scientist, his way of thinking is philosophical and distinctly Asian in spirit

Thank you. Only way I’ve found to deal with grief is to try and put into the world more of what the people we miss loved. Probably should donate a copy of Zhuangzi as well.

How do we know the dog didn't know he was in a horror movie?

let's dehumanize zhuangzi next

one nice thing about the zhuangzi is that people translate the names a lot
I wonder if people would understand Plato better if we translated the names also.

If so, get ready for a dialogue about rhetoric between Vigor and Powerful Salvation with interjections by Colt and Beautiful Fame.
