On the evening of February 6, 2026, a former member of Extinction Rebellion NYC (XRNYC) was visited by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force at their residence 200 miles outside of New York City.
This is not an isolated situation. On March 6, 2025, FBI agents with Massachusetts State Troopers in tow visited six activists affiliated with Extinction Rebellion Boston. Two weeks ago the DOJ opened an investigation into our friends at Climate Defiance for a viral peaceful protest.
The administration has escalated to a new focus...the climate moveme

XRNYC is a nonviolent, decentralized group of artists, small business owners, parents, retired teachers, and everyday New Yorkers. We are not terrorists!
We helped the city declare a climate emergency. We put a boat in Times Square to draw attention to rising seas. We use artistic nonviolent organized protests, community outreach, and strategic
advocacy to empower everyday citizens and drive meaningful environmental change.
As we watch the planet shoot past the catastrophic warming target of 1.5 degrees, We are already witnessing billions of dollars in damages from the effects of extreme temperatures, chaotic weather disasters, and flooding that precedes desertification and mass migration.

This is an escalation against the climate movement as a whole, and the next phase of this administration's crackdown on dissent that many of us have been expecting. Trump is weaponizing the DOJ to attack peaceful protesters in order to appease the multi-trillion-dollar fossil fuel industry that got him elected. We can only assume that they are feeling threatened by our movement. This also functions as a distraction, at a time when thousands of documents are being released about a deep web of child sex trafficking involving the most powerful people in the world, the DOJ is instead using its resources to target our group of creative non-violent environmental activists.

He talked about how the red paint represented blood and black paint represented oil. The FBI agent also referenced this article when he said that the action was celebrated by other groups like XRNYC and climate defiance.
