Employers are always handwringing about autism accommodations in the workplace and I gotta tell you: ear defenders and quiet workstations are the least of your problems. What autistic people really need is *whispers* for other people to do their actual jobs.

After doing security patching for 50k workstations in a major corporation, I learned that each piece of Adobe software is essentially a mummy. It's a corpse program shambling around all wrapped up in bandages holding it together. Also, never look at the horrors inside the bandages. 🫣

Autistic people need two types of accommodations:

Type #1: Ear defenders, quiet workstations, note taking apps

Type #2: Decolonized workplaces, justice for all, truly sustainable work

Employers freak out about #1 and never even see #2 coming.

"did you install this yourself?"
"yep sure did!"

we have 17 wall mount workstations to replace and every one of these vesa screws is torqued to approximately 30,000 pounds

That's right, Fred Brooks said in 1987 that automatic programming, AI, graphical programming, and workstations are not going to be the silver bullet for our problems. Because our real problems are complexity, [adoption], changeability, and invisibility.

I love when hobbyist Linux desktop users forget that servers and enterprise workstations exist bc wdym you’re radicalized against the concept of swap lol

In short, capital, and capitalism, always has a tendency towards crisis by undermining the things that are necessary to sustain capitalism: https://thoughtshrapnel.com/2025/11/14/in-short-capital-and-capitalism.html

Wow, after installing #solaris 2.5.1 on my #sun ultra 10, I can really see why people loved these old #unix workstations.

It's so easy to develop some software on this!

What did science PhD students get up to when they weren't doing science on their UNIX workstations in the 1990s?

Well, gaming of course!

Come and play some networked (and non-networked) games on a couple of old Sun Microsystems gaming rigs!

(Gaming rigs need lights inside, right?)

Similarly, separate workstations, separate displays, peripherals, isolated vlan for my work devices on my home network (2nd isolated vlan for my partners work devices, too). I even recently went so far as to put all the work stuff on one power strip and collecting energy usage in Home Assistant.

The Trump administration has ordered FBI employees to immediately search their workstations and digital media for any records pertaining to the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa, two law enforcement sources told CNN. omg ~ why is this a priority?! 😲 www.msn.com/en-us/news/u...

Drove nearly 400 miles around northern Michigan today while validating workstations for staff training. Fall colors seem to be beyond their peak now, but it's still beautiful.

We failed to ever hold Microsoft accountable for anything. We let CP/M die, we let DR-DOS die, we let OS/2 die, we let Unix workstations die, we never let Linux get past a niche, we never let BeOS get past a niche of a niche and then we let it die.
