Look what they did to Notepad. Shut the fuck up. This is Notepad. You are not welcome here. Oh yeah "Let me use Copilot for Notepad". "I'm going to sign into my account for Notepad". What the fuck are you talking about. It's Notepad.

I would argue typewriters didn't fade away, they changed form and became more accessible - everyone I went to uni with could keyboard and use wordprocessing software, whereas 15 years before, most uni students paid others to type out their handwritten essays.

I've turned most of that off. I find it distracting, and, especially at work, problematic because (due to the nature of my work) it tries to "fix" things I type that are correct but unusual-for-wordprocessing.

I don't mind *curly* quotes, but Smart ones broke every non-Word wordprocessing software I ever used. 25+ years later I'm still growling.

If you want formatting, you use WordPad, or Word, or GoogleDocs, or LibreOffice or any other wordprocessing option.
Notepad is the thing you use when you specifically *don’t* want formatting.
For example, stripping out the quirks from a document descended from a InfoMap template created in 97.

I was trying to remember the name of the word processor, but it was Tasword as you say. Thanks for that!
Amstrad had a very big selling line called WPC at that time. It had green screen and used Locoscript software. It was the dawn of affordable wordprocessing.
Prior to that you needed IBM.

Yeah, wordprocessing on a computer vs typewriter is way different than using a computer that lies to you 50% of the time.

like yesterday shit where you put the dvd into the computer and without doing anything else you can code on it, do office shit, etc it does everything but now to do the same shit you have to pay for the luxury of using office apps like spotify but for wordprocessing?

My parents have a *very old* (I'm going to say, Windows XP) computer, which they use for Gmail and some basic wordprocessing. Almost every programme on it is getting to the end of it's life, so I'd like to create a Linux OS that I can boot from a flash drive.

If all you're doing is wordprocessing Libra Office is workable. I have it on a couple of machines around the shop and office. If you need a functional spreadsheet program, I wouldn't touch Libre Office.

@mrjamesob.bsky.social I think it's pretty straightforward at one level:WHSmiths is known for physical books and physical writing, which has been replaced by digital reading and wordprocessing - yet, they haven't kept up and changed their offer accordingly 🤷🏽♀️
