CURVE WINS OVER MUSCLE: Mr., Miss Dundalk Picked In Y.M.C.A. Contests ;'gezs:n (1837-); Dec 14, 1958; ProQuest Historical Newspapers: The Baltimore Sun Mr., Miss Dundalk Picked In Y.M.C.A. Contests Fourteen girls and seven boys matched curves against muscles last night at the Dundalk YMCA. Since men outnumbered wom- en in the audience of more than 200, curves won. Formally. the business was choosing of a/Miss Dundalk and a Mr. Dundalk, cach title based primarily on the physique of the contestants involved. Carole Talkin, who is 15 but looks older, was the winning miss, Bob Ruth, who gave an exhi- bition of weight-lifting before the beauty contest just to warm Betty Snively and Carole Lee Haase, both 16 _were runners-up for the MissllDundalk title. Gordon Brown and Ike Han- zinikitas were second and third in the male half of the display. One of the most appreciative spectators was an elderly man on the second row who kept fidgeting around impatiently while members of the Dundalk Y.MCA. Barbell Club, the sponsoring group, pressed and curled and jerked and snatched a few weights as an opening at- traction. Girls Pleased Him Fven when the accumulated iron on the genuine Olympic har passed the 600-pound mark, he kept glancing at the clock and muttering. Then the girls came on. One sashayed out and was in- troduced by name and age: 16. “Sixteen! Look at that. Now vou know thal's somecthing. Sixteen!" said the man. His glasses shipped toward the end of his nose. . The fans around him chuckled at his unintentionally loud en- thusiasm, but he kept right on. The next one was 16, too. He Just couldn’t believe it. His wonder grew as one after the other walked out, walked back and made their moment of conversation with the emcee. ‘Then it was done: Carole was chosen the winner, and the boys started making mice chase each other up and down their arms, The man's interest waned again; but most of the girls paid attention.
