How is it gonna run the fuckin experiments Ruth. How is gonna do the immense amount of wetlab work, culturing cells, bombarding them with particulates, and then prep tissues for analysis Ruth. How is it gonna perform clinical trials Ruth.

"Data analysis" is the smallest, easiest part of this.

We are blessed to have @bbbranjan.bsky.social. Follow Bobby for hot takes on preprints, microbiome and ML. Original computational biologist now wetlab guru!

He also just co-first published a cracking preprint

Oh, and he’s looking for ML/AI positions later next year👌
Starter packs are fab, but skew towards established folks

Cue intros into all the amazing people in our lab… give them a follow 🚶

First up Marzia Munafo. Leading a spectacular oocyte epigenomics project (watch this space 👀) and science illustrator extraordinaire. Check out the beautiful works 👇👇
Time for an new intro under these skies 🔵
I’m a molecular biologist (currently postdoc-ing at EMBL) & also a science illustrator - taking your scientific discoveries and turning them into unconventional, colourful and creative illustrations! ✨ #sciart #scicomm

I'm thrilled to join @pranam.bsky.social and @rohitsingh8080.bsky.social. Duke has a unique blend of translational scientists that can bring ideas from the wetlab, to software and ML, back into the wetlab, all in service of characterising, engineering and programming biology!

I never thought that I would wear again the lab coat 🥼 but I did it to sequence RNA with @nanoporetech.com at @guigolab.bsky.social . Thanks to @scarbonells.bsky.social , Carme and Zighi for their great teachings and patience in the wetlab. They definitely have solutions for everything!
Do you work in 💫human genetics💫?
Have you ever worried about what’s inside your gene annotation GTF⁉️

WELL, YOU SHOULD! 😱
Especially when studying a genetically diverse 🌍 cohort!

🔴We discover that gene annotations are European-biased 👉 impacting downstream analyses!

Long-read transcriptomics of a diverse human cohort reveals widespread ancestry bias in gene annotation
Accurate gene annotations are fundamental for interpreting genetic variation, cellular function, and disease mechanisms. However, current human gene annotations are largely derived from transcriptomic...

Hands on the most genial thing I saw any student do. Dont want to sit infront of the FPLC when optimizing runs? Well, stream it to your pc in the wetlab where you can work on something else.

The flipside is that in a non-Ac job with the discipline of learning to live like a grad student and postdoc, the catch-up on retirement savings and just general networth has been pretty fast. And it's not like people on the wetlab side of life sciences companies make FAANG money.

Excellent and thoughtful post. Something I have thought a lot about as I have only had a few chances to help design wetlab experiments with scientists in the past.

Yesterday, something magical happened in our wetlab.

The #CapeEleutheraQueenConchConservancy collected our first queen conch eggs!

Most of these eggs were released offshore, and some were kept in the lab for observance. We are delighted to report that they've been hatching!

This approach, together with ESM-2-based embeddings and a masking strategy enabled us to train a model that showed high success rates in the subsequent wetlab validation.

If you mean the wetlab work, I was one of Rich's students, (but not mostly on the citrate stuff).

Which can lead to fun things like a 1st author Science paper as a grad student (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...), and coverage by Carl Zimmer ( www.nationalgeographic.com/science/arti...)

Moving from dyads to groups, we consider citation sentiment across scientific disciplines. We find that drylab disciplines use more sentiment (favorable & critical), whereas wetlab disciplines cite more neutrally. These findings track the differently valued explanations that disciplines offer.

February 16, 2025 at 12:44 AM
Yes of course. I was specifically referring to the drylab side of things, but for the wetlab side protocols have been benchmarked ad nauseam as well and still some of the demonstrably bad kits and bad protocols remain popular.

Since he just joined 🦋, I’ll embarrass @jsunn-y.bsky.social again by about winning a Google Fellowship!

Jason does amazing work at the intersection of AI and Protein Engineering, from developing new AI methods all the way to getting results validated in the wetlab.
