Possible arrangements in the future:
-Buckhead/Southwest: public safety, pro-business, traditional Atlanta way politics
-Buckhead/eastside: urbanism/walkability, change/anti-corruption
-Southwest/eastside: anti-Trump, cultural progressiveness

Liveability list #1 bikability and #2 walkability. So that's already shady.
Then Dubai makes the list, so it's obviously not serious.
Then you realize the study is made by ... marketing people. "Brand" people.

I made a post about walkability in St. Paul, and commenters took it as an opportunity to pit Minneapolis and St. Paul against each other. I don’t know how to explain that it’s not productive.

I'm greatly in favor of planning & zoning reforms that make it easier to build housing, mixed-use development, transit & walkability improvements, etc. But ideally that would get supplemented by progressive land & property transfer taxes permanently funding affordable housing & related investments.

Playing a bit of Cities Skylines. Trying to build a city that prioritizes educating citizens, walkability, and public transit. Hoping it'll manifest non-specific outcomes in the real world on this day.

I'll tell ya the trouble about Lonsdale after taking buses around Vancouver all day: we don't have convenience stores. This is still a car street despite it's high walkability score.

why do US planners & politicians talk about neighborhood on left - auto-centric w/ dense affordable housing limited to broad, toxic arterials. poor walkability & public realm...
like vienna one on right - density bounded by arterials, good walkability, high density of retail, parks, quality of life

urbanists assemble: would you trade walkability and a house that drives you a little insane and requires work for bikeability and the perfect house that's basically done?

yes instead of focusing it broadly for more walkability - we hyperfocus it to arterials
then, at parcel level, we allow nearly 40-60% more than you'd find in similar height buildings in EU

Can we find data that shows people's health is related to the walkability of their neighbouhood?
Compare North etobicoke to the annex etc....
Be nice to find walkability better at predicting good health than income level. (not sure we would but maybe.)
cheers

Everyone goes on about how you lose weight vacationing outside the US and can confirm it’s a real thing. But everyone gets conspiracy-brained with it like “it’s bc of this chemical” or whatever. It’s two things: sugar content and walkability. That’s literally it

Seattle Department of Transportation is setting aside 200,000.00 to work on a design to make walkability improvements to the Admiral Junction intersection in West Seattle. This is something championed by Alki Bike and Board to improve the out of car experience.

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind paying higher prices if they were meant to discourage so many people from being on the roads, but that would require us to have something resembling walkability or a working public transportation system. I miss Chicago so much in that respect.

Drivers in a nutshell. They carry this same entitlement to City Council and to Community Boards in NYC. Even my dad is like this except that he supports walkability and bike lanes and urbanism. youtu.be/mwPSIb3kt_4?...

While I was waiting for the lightrail, I saw a mother and her children playing as they ran up to the station.
That's some good stuff right there.

Hey, #yyccc, we have an opportunity to bring back the community store and business in neighborhood when we update our land use bylaw next year.
It's a small thing, but can really improve community walkability and vibrancy.
Yes, I will die on this hill.

Toronto is trying to get corner stores and cafes in residential neighbourhoods again. Here’s how the plan has changed
City staff are back with a modified plan to allow corner stores and cafes in residential neighbourhoods. The residents’ association that opposed the plan says it’s still not happy.

DC being such an outlier when it comes to *not* spending time in traffic is clear when you look at its transportation system:
They have made very concrete (no pun intended) investments in things like
- walkability
- protected bike lanes
- transit (especially the subway) (1/3)

Very succinct summary of the Law of Induced Traffic:
"Reality check: Expanding a highway doesn't necessarily reduce traffic delays, researchers have found. Instead, more drivers show up to try to take advantage of the increased supply of roadway, and the traffic problem continues."

We're spending more time stuck in traffic than ever
The average U.S. car commuter is spending a record 63 hours annually stuck in traffic.

when I travelled there it felt like these little pockets of fun urban walkability but beyond that it was just highway wasteland that was so fucking hostile to human life it may as well have been space. how the fuck. bulldoze it all man
