#WCML
It needed to be completed in full, ECML and WCML are at capacity. Running fast trains connecting the big cities on a separate line allows other trains to be scheduled. Networks require strong backbones.

Apparently even the junctions with WCML north of the massive delta junction at Birmingham have been pared back or delayed because the abandonment of the Crewe and Manchester bits had basically no alternative plan...

It sort of vaguely will be open north of the highest speed bits.

Good good it is compatible. At least it will allow for more capacity on the WCML

Couple of days ago a Pendolino 390117 was derailed at 80mph at Shap on the WCML. Fortunately all were OK and the train stayed upright. Here's the very same unit in happier days passing through Lichfield at speed - 03-05-2018 #railways #trains #railphotography #trainphotography #photography

Avanti West Coast are still running trains on the WCML from Glasgow to Carlisle. Why isn't the travel advice ever phrased as 'Do not travel south of Carlisle'?
November 4, 2025 at 11:07 AM
Due to what's happened at Shap today, travel advice is not to travel north of Preston on the WCML till at least Wednesday 5th November

It’s not been a great few days for the railway network, first #Huntingdon now a derailment at #Shap which will probably affect the WCML for days. Sympathy for all staff and passengers involved in the consequences of these events.

Bloke on #BBC says that the derailment at Shap on the WCML will cause "major disruption" .... No sh-one-t, Sherlock.

Further proof, if it’s needed, that we desperately need HS2 to replace the Victorian railway line that is WCML. But it ain’t gonna happen in my lifetime 😳 www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cz...
Major incident declared as train derails in Cumbria, but no injuries reported

The investment in Brum is welcome, but the big benefit of HS2 has nowt to do with journey times to London & everything to do with freeing up capacity on the WCML

The real beneficiaries aren’t commuters to London, but people in underserved towns who will get new & more frequent local train services

Terrible thing to have happened.

Sky's advice to travellers would be more helpful if they hadn't merged the list of services affected, and the list of other operators on which tickets will be valid – e.g. Newcastle to Carlisle, then via WCML to London.

Correct, in Not'ham and Leicester. New tunnel under connecting it up is cheap when looking at the big picture of getting the GC operational.

WCML could branch into GC at Rugby, then GC into HS2 at Aylesbury onto London. Scrap HS2 nth of A'bury. Greater capacity into London.

On West Coast they had pension deficits. On East Coast they overpromised and underdelivered spectacularly. They also did all they could to stop any sort of competition on the WCML by blackmailing the government.

The Northern leg, hence the importance of connecting to the existing WCML, otherwise it's just a very expensive way of connecting Birmingham to Old Oak Common. A poorly conceived and specified project from start to finish.
October 23, 2025 at 8:36 AM
And then the more they fuck around with it and chop bits off it, the less it can actually do what it's meant to do and take traffic off the WCML to free up capacity.

As someone living on the WCML using the train regularly, that would be an extremely welcome benefit.

Announced on the same day as they've delayed the HS2 extension to the WCML. #FuckTheNorth
October 22, 2025 at 4:37 PM
Back in the late 2000s the studies concluded that building a new line was a much more practical proposition than trying squeeze more out of already stuffed existing lines. That was off the back of the WCML modernisation project that was overcost/time and had resulted in years of passenger disruption
October 22, 2025 at 4:14 PM
Probably because there’s still an argument to be made to extend things further north to Crewe than bunging everything into the WCML in the busiest section
High-Speed 2 is meant to have an 18-mile stretch of line linking to WestCoastMainLine

(without which, it's even more pointless)

today FT can reveal a fresh four-year delay to this part of the scheme

I think this paragraph is key. That simply running HS2 services onto the WCML at Handsacre as is, is just too sub optimal an option to continue with, which I won't lie I sort of agree with.
