Used to be people would come to the southwest to cure respiratory issues, tuberculosis, etc. This has been appearing in dogs and cats as well, have your vet test for it if your pet has issues of unknown origin.

In the Central Valley and Central Coast, breathing dust or dirt outdoors can increase your chances of getting Valley fever, a disease caused by a fungus in the dirt in these regions. Symptoms can include fever, cough and tiredness that last for weeks.
