the human urge to make utilitarian objects beautiful--same force that turned medieval drain spouts into fabulous gargoyles
Korea is flexing here with this highly artistic floating solar farm, newly commissioned days ago.

47.2 MW of capacity located near the 50 MW Imha hydroelectric dam. The modules are arranged into the shape of Korea’s flag and the Mugunghwa, Korea’s national flower.

Any concern Trump has for Jews is and has always been strictly performative and utilitarian.

And even his weak defense of Jews is ultimately temporarily, for as long or as short it benefits him.
In a press gaggle today, Trump refused to condemn Tucker Carlson for having Nick Fuentes on his show. He went further, refusing to even condemn Fuentes himself.

🚨 Calling all American Jewish leaders and organizations: Tell the president this must stop. Our lives are at stake.

I refuse to strap myself into years of massive car loan debt. My philosophy is simple: utilitarian function over flashy form.

I'd rather buy an older car with life left, invest in simple repairs and save money long-term.

the hard part is dealing with the historical baggage that sees it as punitive rather than utilitarian, and the overriding social sense of current and former prisoners as an untrustworthy other

You forgot the plastic bladder cardboard wine cask - sheer utilitarian elegance!

I get so annoyed at how awesome grimoires and books about demons look in movies all these awesome woodcuts and cool printing but I own a lot of those types of books and they’re some of the most no frills small type utilitarian books I’ve ever read lol I want them to look coooool

I have spent three full days reading through emails. Epstein was involved in everything, including getting Brett Kavanaugh confirmed. This is beyond disturbing. He was a believer in a utilitarian society of white men by creating anarchy and shifting society to one where children are sexual beings.

After years without a watch; I'm back. I'm a utilitarian guy and I've always liked the expedition. My last watch was a citizen eco drive that I couldn't keep accurate for the life of me. I think it took one too many bumps. I'll feel less bad about this one getting wrecked.

His concern with everyone is performative and utilitarian, I don't think he feels care. But also he's very full of stereotypes and socially normative bigotry.

They added a mess of Nothing Features that made the site a mess to navigate and also run like ass for a time. Shit like sub-only emotes, "chest quest", whatever that was, their own funny money "kudos" that're just bits, it seemed very misguided.

Piczel by comparison is refreshingly utilitarian.

It’s funny that every fake art scammer has a profile blurb like ~I make dreams reality~ or ~Just a wandering dreamer~ and most real artists I know have very straightforward utilitarian profiles, a vtuber profile, and/or something like that “I am the gremlin under this bridge come lookit m’stuff”.

I finally made a computer-esque planner spread. It’s very utilitarian, but it’s making my eyes happy. :3 #bulletjournal #bujoinspo #novnov #writersky

I've often thought that in the interim, we should organize to use marriage for strictly utilitarian purposes. Like, develop a network of single people with good health insurance and other people who need insurance. To subvert marriage for the common good.

How did I phrase it before? In a *purely utilitarian sense*, I think you would prevent more death and human suffering on a time scale that is generally pretty comprehensible even to an individual human by replacing industrial capitalism as soon as possible, regardless of the means required.

ARC raiders has gotta have some of the most forgettable enemy designs of all time. Amazon Essentials type robots. Maybe the in-world justification is that machines made by an inhuman intelligence would be austere and utilitarian, but they don’t even lean into that. Weird!

An anti-utilitarian national policy.
This is far worse than anyone expected.

Trump's HUD plan would cut *two-thirds* of permanent housing and push as many as 170,000 formerly homeless people back onto the street—redirecting funds to work mandates, forced treatment, and encampment sweeps.

All as mass internment camps are being built.

Many people believe that the way to attract people to the geosciences is via logical, utilitarian returns on an undergraduate degree.

But left unexplored is the power of the field's inherent irrational, cosmic horror to command attention.

It's 2nd only to astronomy in that, & much more immediate.

Have just bought two pairs of slippers from M&S, Christmas present from me to me. They are utilitarian and machine washable and I got 20% off but I'm not feeling as pleased about them as I would like to.

I do find that buying most of my own Christmas gifts means I get the same stuff each year. >

That touches on one of my frustrations with the dull-eyed fascist techbro dipshits: They all lament a decline of "The West", while having more money than the goddamn Medicis.

Not one has been a patron to a single fucking artist, or comissoned a single non-utilitarian building.

Sadly, we don't have the density yet to turn our stations into works of art, rather than basic utilitarian concrete.

But as we grow, and especially as we do our next batch of light rail, surface or otherwise. We should definitely get on beautiful structures.

Transit hubs are the lungs of a city.

I know it's in the same vein/world as this thing. This dragon, Ayrmael is a dragon god of purely practical/utilitarian creation and the forge.

I think the above one is more about aesthetic beauty, art, music poetry that sort of thing.

I'm trying to hope that people are joking about it because the other piece is too awful to joke about but also it's too awful to not joke?

I don't know. I truly don't know. There's also a utilitarian part of me saying "whatever works" and a huge part of me that feels exactly like you do 💔

meanwhile, industry and commerce are kicking up again; fashion trends rise again from the purely utilitarian need to protect as many as possible from the elements, and delegations from other nations recuperating from the Rumbling start to show up

“The chief qualification of a mass leader has become unending infallibility,” Hannah Arendt writes in “The Origins of Totalitarianism,” “he can never admit an error. Mass leaders in power have one concern which overrules all utilitarian considerations: to make their predictions come true.”
