#Ungrading
I am very much on board for #Ungrading but I retain some concerns about how we *know* that it is reducing harm. It works for me, but there are a number of confounding variables that could explain the harm reduction. How can we know if the grading policy is better? #AcademicSky

I've been ungrading for years before it got this bad, we can do things without being forced by companies hollowing out education ALSO sometimes a grade is really all academia can do given budget cuts and class sizes: fund us more
Part of me hopes that AI makes grading so untenable it forces our system into ungrading, because all evidence suggests grading is antithetical to learning.

A3. One of my challenges of ungrading (Ss pitch a grade every 5 weeks) is that Ss are losing urgency with reading and writing because it’s not an immediate grade, where other classes are usually traditional point systems which they prioritize. It’s hard for to see the big picture. #UngradingChat
Here are the questions for this week's slow chat on #UngradingChat

Thank you for sharing these samples! I love the structure and content of these portfolios. #ungrading

I’ve done it in not situations, including a GenEd this past semester. I do have more check-ins in the latter category, to ensure they understand & are following. At the same time, in either scenario they have to put in X work for Y result—I haven’t done full ungrading TBH

📌 I’ve been leaning into #ungrading this year. Thanks for posting this - I’m excited to read through and see what your structure looks like.

I agree. What I mean is, I see people moving toward "collaborative grading" rather than "ungrading" as a term for the model and "alternative grading" rather than "ungrading" for the umbrella. I see a move away from "ungrading" as a term on most fronts, except for its philosophical connotations.

I also use ungrading, which means I provide feedback, but no grades, on assignments. Students have many opportunities to revise and improve their work, and their final grade is determined through a holistic look at that work rather than an average of graded activities.

I haven’t given an exam since 2018 and I have graded anything since 2020. I have a feeling it’s going to be a hard landing going back to a traditionally assessed course this year - any advice from those who’ve done this?? #STEM #EduSky #ungrading

I haven't written about that anywhere. I think I got it from the anthology on Ungrading edited by Susan Blum

Excellent thread on ungrading.
I didn’t make a full shift to ungrading before I left my prof position, but I was heading in that direction.
Hi! I’m a college professor, and I use ungrading in most of my classes, and I’d love to have a good faith discussion with anyone who wants to know more about it, since a much better known historian and college professor decided to dismiss and belittle this pedagogy without learning anything about it

Great conversations with classes last week about assessment! Ss were brutally honest about gaming the system and all admitted that they truly learn very little. All are now excited to have the chance to take risks and learn thinking skills without putting their grade/future at risk! #ungrading🎢🍎

I taught ASTR 310/311 for few years. Same thing, science cred for 3rd yr non-Science students. Majority of Ss just wanted to get the damn credit. But some, when given opp, leaned in and fucking blew me away with their creativity. My advice: provide ungrading opp (portfolio?)but don't make it req'd.

I love this connection! Nicole just wrote a great article on #ungrading in dance, David. I was lucky enough to be interviewed for it. The ungrading dance community is small, but growing :) Thanks for starting this list!

This is a popular study for the proponents of #ungrading because it puts a number to the effects of grades on learning. There is something persuasive in the data that shows numbers get higher when task-oriented feedback is provided. Hard to argue with bigger numbers.

I want to learn more about ungrading but am uncertain as to how I'd implement it. Anyone here have experience with it? Is it helping?
