My best friend at UCSB - a firefighter’s son - did work study and graduated debt-free with undergrad & masters engineering: debt free.
That was routine for my cohort: we started before Reagan.
And before the sadistic economics & economists post-Reagan pulled up the prosperity ladder we all once had.

Michael Gurven reframes aging as evolutionary success
By redefining aging as an evolutionary achievement, Gurven challenges a youth-obsessed culture to see the later decades of life as vital to our collective survival

well the other fun part of this is that Colin’s actual background is in spiders and he was caught up in the Pruittgate data fabrication scandal at UCSB
I went to grad school with him and went to his defense and knew others caught up in the scandal

I was in my apartment at UCSB and that earthquake made our chandelier sway!! And when the broadcast came back on, all I remember is how ridiculous Jose Conseco's wife looked walking around carrying her fur coat.

I remember getting to UCSB and reading Tanya's work in grad school....it hadn't been covered in my undergrad courses!! (But to be fair we didn't have a strictly tectonics course in ug)
Took her plate tectonics course....she's such a cool person with amazing stories.

Well all of those, esp UCSB, have frats but it's not, of course, culturally dominant. (My sister was in a sorority at Santa Cruz). But yes, there's a certain sports college identity some UMC CA kids want who can't get into Cal/UCLA but think they're too good for SDSU/Fresno State
