Hardcover is an elegant new serif typeface for display use. It's one of my earliest typeface ideas, dating back to a sketch in 1978, inspired by the lettering I’d seen on mass-market book covers. More info here: www.marksimonson.com/notebook/vie... And here: www.marksimonson.com/fonts/view/h...

To be clear, the White House lettering is not bad. It is well made and mounted but I don't think a calligraphic typeface has the gravitas for a public building. I would have chosen an ALL CAPS Roman style serif typeface in cast bronze with beveled edges, finished with a dark green verdigris patina.

The only way to improve on this would be to use the typeface for the new “the Oval Office” sign.

There are a lot of arguments for why Mamdani won. I, a pundit, believe it was the typeface.

Love that Mamdami‘s campaign popularized simple, old-fashioned, sign painter’s typeface.
Being the anachronist I am, I very much dig a return to this style.
