EXT. NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN - UNDERWATER - NIGHT Moonlight pierces the surface. It reaches as far as it can before disappearing into the inky depths. Something splashes into the water and sinks, trailing BLOOD and BITS OF FLESH in looping spirals. CHUM. More chum drops in until the water is cloudy with gore. Then, with a bigger splash, A HUNK OF MEAT ON A HOOK. The meat hangs in suspense for a moment, leaking blood. POV: A BIG ANIMAL swims for the bait. Cut back to the meat on the hook. It bobs up and down in the moon-shot sea. Then -- Displaced water from the animal’s massive body nudges the meat an instant before it arrives in a blur of GREY FLESH. A GREAT WHITE SHARK. The shark swallows the meat and hauls it away. The hook is set. EXT. FISHING BOAT - SAME A shabby but well-equipped 40-footer with a hefty fishing rod mounted on the back deck. The rod bends as the shark takes the bait. The reel spins. DIRK, a grizzled poacher, grabs the rod with both hands. He straps himself into a deck chair. DIRK That’s it. Swim all you want. He watches the line screaming into the water and yells over his shoulder. DIRK (cont'd) Put it in reverse! He’s a fighter! The CAPTAIN fires up the engine with a worried look. Dirk braces himself for a fight. THREE OTHER POACHERS, SCRATCH, POTS, and VINNIE, gather eagerly around him. SCRATCH Is this the one? DIRK Sure feels like it. The poachers rub their hands together and grin. DIRK (cont'd) (to the Captain) Keep it running! We’ll wear him out! EXT. UNDERWATER - SAME The shark swims with incredible speed, trailing the line from its bloody mouth. EXT. FISHING BOAT - SAME Dirk glances at the rapidly emptying reel, keeping tabs. DIRK Give me more speed! The Captain cranks the engine, eyeing the rpm's, which hover dangerously in the red. CAPTAIN She can’t take much more! DIRK Yes she can! Just then, the line runs out and goes rigid as steel. Dirk lurches forward in his chair but his straps hold. EXT. UNDERWATER - SAME The shark is yanked back. The hook goes in deeper. EXT. FISHING BOAT - SAME Dirk starts reeling in the line with big, labored turns.

INT. OFFICE - NIGHT A cramped cubicle farm. Nothing but the sound of buzzing computers until-- CRASH! A broom clatters to the floor. OLIVIA (O.C.) SHIT! OLIVIA GERING (30s, F) crouches under an office desk, covers her mouth. Dressed in head to toe black, backpack tucked between her legs. She's too smart to be pulling something like this, but too angry to talk herself out of it now. She pushes back her sleeve, checks the time. The glowing EXIT sign is the only light until-- CLICK! The door opens and a flashlight beam slices across the room. Cubicles. Monitors. A lone beach babe calendar. The SECURITY GUARD holding the flashlight chuckles. He lowers the light, just misses Olivia in her hiding spot. She curls up, tries to make herself smaller... The Security Guard's boots stop in front of Olivia's hiding spot, the light falling on the floor in front of her at the fallen broom. SECURITY GUARD Of course. He picks the broom up and leans it back against the wall. He takes two steps before it falls back to the ground. He rolls his eyes and pulls a radio from his pocket. SECURITY GUARD (CONT'D) Level four, looks like it was a fucking broom. Yeah, all clear. "Smart cameras" my ass... you want a coffee? He saunters back into the hallway and disappears. Olivia peeks out from her hiding spot, makes a run for it. INT. STUDIO - NIGHT - FLASHBACK Black eggcrate line the walls of the recording studio. A desk with control boards and expensive microphones sits beside a support pillar decorated with American flags and a prominent DON'T TREAD ON ME flag. The door opens and Olivia slinks in, black mask pulled up to conceal her face from the nose down. ZIP! She opens her backpack and pulls out two canisters of lighter fluid. She pops the lids off, looms over the control board and recording equipment. One last, deep breath and.... SQUEEZE! Olivia douses everything with lighter fluid. Liquid drips off the microphones and down the mixing boards. Soaks the carpet. She tosses the empties aside, grabs another pair of lighter fluid canisters and sprays the walls. The black eggcrate panels hold the liquid like a sponge. Olivia tosses the last empty containers to the ground. She digs in her backpack, pauses to look up at the bubble in the ceiling-- the security camera watches from above. She pulls a RED spray paint cannister from her backpack. Shake, shake, hissssss-- Olivia steps away from the wall to reveal her handiwork: ROT IN HELL MURDERER.

The news crawl below the burning crash footage echoes the same grim information as the unseen reporter: AIRPLANE CRASH IN COURTLAND, SOUTH DAKOTA... ONGOING SEARCH FOR SURVIVORS... Natalie enters with a burger and stack of oven fries. A plastic ramakin with pills rests beside a glass of milk. She sets it on Jenn's lap, glances at the screen. JENN Did you ever hear back from Ryan? NATALIE Yeah, he's okay. Said he'd call as soon as they get the fire contained. JENN I'm sure he's doing the best he can. The screen's footage shifts to EMTs transporting human-sized black bags to waiting emergency vehicles. Natalie absently fidgets with her wedding ring. INT. JENN'S BEDROOM - NIGHT Eyes pinched closed, folded hands to her forehead. Jenn sits in prayer at the side of her bed. The only décor in the bedroom are large framed photos of Natalie and Bailey as babies, and a faded illustration of Jesus gazing skyward in prayer. JENN … in Jesus' name, amen. Jenn opens her eyes and Natalie takes her by the shoulder, helps her into bed. It's a familiar routine. Natalie pulls the covers up to Jenn's chin and kisses her on the forehead, turns to leave. JENN You know, I pray every night that you and Ryan might have another chance. Natalie pauses in the door, her hand on the light switch. NATALIE Mom, please. JENN I know you're happy for Bailey, but I can tell it still hurts. It's hurts both of you. NATALIE We'll talk in the morning. Night. Natalie turns out the light and closes the door. EXT. PORCH - NIGHT A faint glow on the horizon, a jagged line of darkness where the cornfields meet the blue night sky. Natalie sits on the back porch, alone with the sound of night bugs and a half empty Coors Lite. The rustle of grass and a figure emerges from the dark. ANTHONY (20s) wears his stained chef pants from work, cradles a motorcycle helmet under his arm. A mop of dark hair, he's trying (and failing) to grow a beard to look older. He sits beside Natalie on the step as she sips her beer. NATALIE Want me to grab you one from the fridge? ANTHONY I didn't come for the beer. He kisses Natalie, flashes a playful grin when she pulls away. ANTHONY Don't worry, I parked over by the school. No one saw me. He steals a drink of her beer as they both turn toward the dim glow of the smoldering fire in the distance. NATALIE What a fucking day. AnTHONY They ever find any survivors?

INT. GYM - DAY Rachel's feet THUMP on the treadmill belt. Sweat pours down her face and neck, drenches her clothes. 4.97... 4.98... 4.99...5.0 MILES on the display. Rachel hits the button and the belt slows to walking pace. She towels off, hits the STOP button. The gym is empty. She checks her phone, a message from Amund. AMUND (TEXT) Everything okay? She smiles as she types her reply. RAChel (TEXT) Yes. Feel much better. Heading back. She tosses the towel aside, heads to the locker room. INT. OFFICE - DAY Quinn types away at his computer when his desk phone rings. He lets it ring a few times before begrudgingly picking up. OFFICER QUINN Quinn speaking. DARLA (O.S.) Hey, it's Darla. I got your car, but not your man. Quinn sits up. DARLA (O.S.) Vehicle was spotted outside the I-90 interchange. Suspect driving was a twenty-four-year-old white male, Justin Herbert. He's got a few possession charges under his belt, but get this: claims some guy gave him the car and paid him to drive it as far north as he could. OFFICER QUINN Shit... thanks, Darla. I've got to go. He hangs up and dials in a panic. EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY The crunch of a disposable water bottle as Rachel drinks. She pushes through the gym doors into the morning sunshine, downs half the bottle as she crosses the parking lot. Her car is parked under the trees for shade, the police cruiser on the opposite side of the lot near a dumpster. She pulls the bottle away and wipes her mouth, reaches into her purse for the keys when someone yanks her backward. Her bottle skitters to the ground, glug-glugging onto the pavement as NICK (40s) wraps his arm around her neck. BZZZZZ. BZZZZZ. Her phone vibrates in her purse. NICK Thought you were so fucking smart, didn't you? Rachel's feet kick hard. Her nails dig into Nick's forearm, tries to pry herself free. He tightens his stranglehold as Rachel struggles, her windpipe caught in the crook of his muscular arm. INT. POliCE CRUISER POV through the officer's window, Nick silently drags Rachel into the trees. The crackle of radio chatter fills the interior. The officer's blood slowly drips onto the center console from the deep gash in his neck. EXT. WOODED AREA Rachel's feet kick at the weeds and garbage caught in the small wooden area next to the gym parking lot. Safely out of sight from prying eyes.
