With courage and conviction, they served in the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team (which became among the most decorated units of its size and length of service in U.S. history), and in the Military Intelligence Service, where linguists and translators played vital roles.

translators just give an accurate word for word. the clients can figure out it's bullshit on their own

On a few occasions… translators have tended to be squeamish; thus, in Journey to the End of the Night, the statement pertaining to women in wartime, "la guerre porte aux ovaires," becomes, "war goes straight to their tummies." I naturally put the ovaries back in.

Just a thought: did the translators ever object to translating her lies? Maybe the gross ass President's constant spewing of lies?

There’s a place for translation (and interpretation) in the world language classroom. For one, it’s how we can shape future professionals who’ll know when they have the skills to communicate directly with their clients and when they need to call in professional interpreters and translators.

All I saw was people helping people. I'll never forget sitting on the porch of the Arena Role II clinic in the bootleg Vibram Fivefingers I'd bought at the bazaar, watching an amused Afghan kid play with my toes. Reading the comms in the PRT mIRC as teams escorted translators into the mountains.

ICE is disappearing Afghans seeking refuge from the Taliban who were granted asylum legally in the US over a decade ago.

ICE IS doing this to Afghan and Iraqi translators who helped the US military and saved American lives. It is cruelty. It is racism.

Americans betray their allies.

PS, tangential to this particular case, but this seems like a good time to remind people that having an experienced and well-equipped translation team is _extremely crucial_, and replacing translators with genAI slop is absolute clown shit

Then I watched Trump negotiate with extremists to give Afghanistan back to the Taliban. I watched Biden fumble the withdrawal. I watched the Taliban reinstate theo-fascism. I watched our translators get deported to face execution, US amnesty end for almost all but white South Africans. 6/x

Ethical localization isn't an alien concept. 👽

Repel The Rifts is a roguelite tower defense game from @refinedbeargames.bsky.social and
@goblinzstudio.com where you lead a commander through an alien world to hold back chaos. 🛸

LocQuest set phasers to stun in five different languages on this one!

This of course explains why so many translators seem to be so young at heart 😉

And those traits *are not equal* between translations. Not all translations sound equally awesome read aloud, just as not all are equally literal or equally representative.

This is the E.V. Rieu translation (of the Odyssey). And here's the thing: That's a prose translation.

As in, not a poem.

Still some need for translators it seems.
