How to not be swamped by your microclimate data?

The rise of microclimate data may have opened Pandora’s box. Gone are the days of simple bioclimatic variables — now heads spin trying to summarize these timeseries.

A much-needed paper by @krystofchytry.bsky.social:

How to not be swamped by your microclimate data
Microclimate data are finally finding their way more routineously into ecological models – and rightly so. Hooray for that! The growing availability of in-situ measurements is helping us brid…

the first paper from my lab at UCSC is on @ecoevorxiv.bsky.social
led by the brilliant Jordana Sevigny we assembled a >100 year timeseries of invert range extensions in the NE Pacific

huge range fluctuations are common; extensions are overwhelmingly associated with El Niño

Our paper on drought & riparian phenology is out in @globalchangebio.bsky.social, skillfully led by PhD candidate Rose Mohammadi! Upshot: #Drought pushes down water tables & shortens tree growing seasons by intermittent streams - and that response is visible from space #timeseries
How vulnerable are riparian trees to drought? Using groundwater and satellite data from a California waterhsed, our new paper found that trees by drying rivers lost up to 5 weeks of growing season, suggesting they’re nearing critical groundwater limits.

Groundwater and Remotely Sensed Phenology Reveal Vulnerability of Riparian Trees to Drought
We asked how vulnerable riparian trees are to droughts, examining their water use and growing season timing and duration via groundwater data and satellite imagery. Drought shortened the growing seas...

I’d just like to interject for a moment—what you’re referring to as “stock price prediction” is, in fact, “return prediction”, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, “alpha forecasting for convex optimization”. Price timeseries are not a prediction into itself but rather another component of retur

I kicked off a new newsletter focused on time series analysis and forecasting.

My goal is to use it as both a framework and motivation to write my upcoming books on time series and forecasting.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) timeseries at 26.5N was just updated (rapid.ac.uk). It appears that the AMOC has slightly rebounded in 2023 (16.00 Sv) from its minimum in 2022 (15.22 Sv). It is the 7th lowest annual mean AMOC value since 2005. 🌊🧪

I like working on e2e stuff but I truly hate is the 5% of the time I spend getting things to exactly match designs in Figma

The part where I munge data coming from warehouse into an ETL pipe then feed it to one store as a cache / another as a timeseries entry, and combine those & persist is better.

I’m not saying DCM is perfect but please acknowledge that a fundamental ingredient of DCM is that the HRF is estimated separately for each voxel/region and each participant. This was in contrast to applications of Granger to raw timeseries, which do suffer from such HRF differences eg in onset

Abstract. Reversed eutrophication, called oligotrophication, has widely been documented globally over the last 30 years in rivers, lakes, and estuaries. However, the absence of a comprehensive and har...
