PhD-themed cake for Rob McHenry's viva celebration last week in Thurso.

Both were adorned with (tasty) Fox scat - very apt with the viva including much discussion of caprophagy (eating 💩) linked to predators' use of tracks in #peatlands.

Up here in Caithness we are all desperately hoping Charles doesn't dump Andrew at Castle Mey, which is about half-way between John O'Groats and Thurso. It's the Queen Mum's old hideaway and Charlie Boy visits every year, closing off the roads.

Also this morning I popped into the North Coast Visitor Centre in #Thurso to see the two #runic inscriptions which have been found in that town. They're very nicely displayed in a room with some cool Pictish stones too. See app.raa.se/open/runor/i... and app.raa.se/open/runor/i...

In #Thurso this morning, I checked out the site which is possibly that mentioned in the #SagaoftheEarlsofOrkney ch. 111, where it says that 'The bishop was in the palace at Scrabster'. The word I translated as 'palace' is 'borg', which is also used of brochs, and the site may once have been a broch.

This lovely herd of common seals was hauled out on the side of the River Thurso last week. As the tide came in, they one by one started to yawn and shift before moving back out to sea

Over on YouTube you can now check out my highland ride from Thurso to Inverness with ember. This new entrant to the Scottish coach market is trying to be a disruptor by using both all-electric buses and also simplifying the pricing model.

But what is it actually like?

Busy weekend delivering leaflets in Thurso - fuelled by coffee from The Haven - and knocking doors in Castletown, Dunnet and Mey. Lot's of concerns about access to healthcare, the state of the roads but also several questions of the Scottish Government'a block on new nuclear.

Sanderlings haring up and down the shoreline are one of my favourite winter spectacles
This small flock was chasing, and being chased by, the waves a couple of days ago in Thurso. Boy, can they shift!
