Too often, ➖ gets reduced to “𝙩𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙖𝙬𝙖𝙮.”
And subtracting integers gets reduced to 𝑘𝑒𝑒𝑝-𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒-𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒.

By the time students reach Gr6, they’ve spent 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 working with number lines, but they’ve all been horizontal. ↔️

Now, 6.NS.C.6 asks them to reason about 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 in 𝑏𝑜𝑡ℎ orientations.

👉 The best way to make that shift?

❓Did you know 4.NF.A.1 actually 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀𝗲?

The 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒 must stay fixed for Ss to truly understand equivalent fractions.

Want to learn which models support this idea & which don’t (& why)?

💭 Ever wondered why number lines don’t appear in the standards until G2?

So much of K and G1 focuses on counting.
Using a number line requires much more abstract thinking than early counting.

So what should you use in K and G1?

Even when students use the standard algorithm for decimals, “tricks” can creep in — and many of them are representation-dependent

🤔 Curious what that means — and why it matters?

Standards aren’t just about big ideas—many also have boundaries

Knowing where to find the limits keeps instruction focused & prevents pushing into later-grade content.
