One more honeyeater for today. A New Holland Honeyeater at a nectar feeder on the Tasman Peninsula. This was by far the commonest of the #honeyeaters on my trip. It was everywhere and in all kinds of different habitats. #BirdingTasmania #BirdingAustralia

New Holland Honeyeater.

The New Holland honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae) is a honeyeater species found throughout southern Australia. It was among the first birds to be scientifically described in Australia, and was initially named Certhia novaehollandiae.

Back in April 1975 "Grumpy Scientist" Dr Harry Recher stuck a New Holland Honeyeater in a precocious child's hand telling her to "hold this". Thus he laid out the course of my life, my calling and obsession . . . #birding #birds #nature

A New Holland honeyeater who's just given himself a quick dunk in the birdbath and fluffed out his feathers to dry, transforming from #birb to #borb and glaring at me for daring to photograph him in this stage.

Such an amazing flower. Visited by birds such as the New Holland honeyeater and also the tiny honey possum.

Plate 3 from Ferdinand Bauer's Illustrationes Florae Novae Hollandiae. The plant featured is Banksia coccinea (Scarlet Banksia). The botanical illustration shows a cut branch of the plant topped by a flower spike. Squat and roughly cylindrical, it has hundreds of individual flowers packed onto it. The many scarlet styles stand outward from the spike like many wires. The leaves on the branch under the flower stand out and slightly upward attached alternately by short leaf stalks. Each is lighter white on the underside and darker on the upper surface with prominent ribs and shallow u-shaped indentations along the edges. To the left there is an isolated spike that is less mature with the red styles looped back on themselves in rows like well managed cables. To the right an isolated spike that has be cut to show the internal structure, the narrow tall cone shaped center is white amid the very long red styles.
