📖 Happy #TermTuesday! 📖

Today we're talking about gratis copies, because who doesn't love a free book! If you're at a publishing house, do you have a different term for these free copies? And do you have other reasons for giving away books at no charge? We'd love to hear from you!

Frailty is not just aging. It is a terminal trajectory. Document it with clarity and pair it with PPS and ADL decline.

Happy #TermTuesday, folks!

Extended text is used to describe complex figures in addition to alt-text (when needed).

#TermTuesday repost!

We forgot to include alt text in this yesterday and were helpfully reminded by some folks online. Many thanks for your patience and understanding!

Guidelines have been established so alt-text is written appropriately. And who writes alt text might vary from press to press.

We are continuing our book-type mini-series for #TermTuesday with... trade books!

Trade books can be found on many university press's lists, as UPs can publish for trade and academic markets. Many UPs have a regional trade list w/ books specific to their geographic location.

It's our first #TermTuesday of 2025, and we're so excited! Today we're talking about comp titles (comparable titles / competing titles) which are a great tool for both authors and publishers alike.

Are you an author or publisher? And when do you use comp titles in your work?

Howdy BlueSKy! We're coming at you live with our first #TermTuesday! Huzzah!

#TermTuesday is meant to help demystify publishing industry terminology.

Today we are covering "series editors"! Series eds often provide additional sources of support, feedback, expertise, & advocacy for the author.

Circling back to this lonely page proofs term to talk about its proofs stage counterpart: proofreading!

Proofreading is done once the manuscript has been copyedited and the page proofs are in. Proofreading is primarily meant to catch minor errors and inconsistencies.

Happy #TermTuesday, Bluesky!

You already know it's #TermTuesday, but did you know that it's also #OAWeek?

The #OpenAccess model is an global publishing movement that extends the reach and impact of scholarly work & promotes equitable public engagement. Not all presses publish OA, but others are known for it!

WOW! Happy September!

It's #TermTuesday! Exclusive review can give editors a fair opportunity to consider a project, especially in competitive situations. Exclusive review does not mean either party, press or author, is committed to publishing the book.

Happy #TermTuesday, PIPsters! What does it mean when a book is "Launched" or "Transmitted"?

The specific workflow varies from press to press, but Launch/Transmittal is the phase of a manuscript's life where the rest of the Press (Mkting, EDP, etc) can begin sinking their teeth into the project.

Happy #TermTuesday!

Monographs generally comprise a bulk of many university press's lists as they are books based on extensive research, written for an academic audience, and provide a detailed exploration of a subject.

NB: University presses publish a wide array of other books, too!!

WOW! Happy August, PIPsters! We're back from a break and ready to get back on track.

It's #TermTuesday! Today we're thinking about exclusive peer review. Exclusive submission can give editors a fair opportunity to evaluate a project, especially in competitive situations.

It's #TermTuesday and we're talking P&Ls! Presses usually have a standard, in-house form or spreadsheet that varies from place to place. What gets factored in, when this is checked, and how depends on the publisher!

(If you're at a press, do your P&Ls have a different name?)

For today's #TermTuesday we are talking about translations!

Translations are a type of book you might encounter on a UP's list. Translated books can differ from others as they often involve negotiating translation rights w/ the original publisher & working with a translator.

Circling back to peer review for #TermTuesday ...what is a split review? They're more common than you think, and the job of an acquisitions editor is to navigate the differences and help the author through it, too!

It's #TermTuesday, and we're back to talk about edited volumes!

These books are comprehensive volumes that explore a singular topic from the different perspectives of the volume's contributors.

This #TermTuesday, we're revisiting ✨ BISAC Codes ✨ from our term archives!! This is often in marketing's wheelhouse, but depending on the press, acquisitions may contribute to choosing the codes as well. 📖 📖
