This is fascinating because this is such a new field and somehow they are going to hire 100 tenure-track faculty in the next 5 years who specialize in it. And yet when asked to fill spots with faculty of color/women/marginalized groups, administrators often cry about how the pipelines don't exist.

Ahhh, I have my first on-site interview for a tenure-track faculty job next week! 🎉 Please wish me luck, but also send any tips or advice you have, especially on questions I should ask and things I should look out for.
Feels wild to have my first interview in so long, too.

In a time of increasing precaritization, 100 new tenure-track positions should be a boon. But the all-in plays on "AI", a term that, in its common usage, refers to technologies that are actively harmful - to students, teaching, and knowledge itself! - frightens and alarms me.

The President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is one of the most coveted & prestigious positions for UC graduates. It gives a hiring incentive to campuses who hire recipients for a tenure track position. What a DAMN travesty.
This is capitulation to Trump's demand letter & anti-diversity agenda.

A devastating set of decisions on the part of UC leadership to withdraw support from our nationally recognized postdoc program that prioritizes research excellence combined with addressing our university public service mission. www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...
UC to Stop Funding Systemwide Postdoc Program
Established in 1984 to encourage women and minority Ph.D.s to pursue academia, the program has attracted right-wing criticism for prioritizing diverse candidates.

This is horrible news. This program is a huge success, identifies brilliant scholars and gives them a transitional landing place that can help them land a tenure track job in the system. It’s a win for students, their programs, and all the schools in the system. Why end it?

As one of the academy's throwaway PhDs--mine is from Stanford and that wasn't enough to get me a tenure-track job--I have every reason to resent people like Stanley.
But I don't hate the guy, and certainly not for leaving the U.S. I just think he's a doofus for being so over-the-top public about it

I'm not saying you should like or agree with Jason Stanley on anything but the context here is interesting.
I will say I don't really blame anyone with any marginalization (Stanley is Jewish) for leaving the U.S. if they can.
People do not have to "stay and fight"

Don’t get me wrong, my current gig is amazing! I have just managed to have a surprisingly long and reasonably well-paid career for someone who’s never had tenure, or even a traditional tenure track job.

Fun fact: I left my tenure-track professor job at a public university in Texas to take an independent school gig in NYC even though it meant giving up on my academic dream because living in Texas was that wretched.
They’ve all gone mad.

"renewal" or diversity. The main problem is the increasing casualisation of academic positions, and the paucity of long term tenure-track equivalent positions. Discriminatory retirement policies do essentially nothing to address this problem.

What about Canada's best and brightest? PhD grads will now potentially be competing for tenure-track jobs against a bunch of US early-career researchers who will have Canadian federal money to make them more attractive hires. It screws a whole generation of scholars on our government's dime.

Anyone with enough experience in AI to teach it, is going to be working in industry making a huge salary rather than earning the pay of an Ohio State tenure-track faculty. The people who usually fill this slot are often those not "allowed" to work in industry due to bias. Not looking good for OS.
