25 years ago, I lived in the authoritarian country of Turkmenistan where the leader ruled with a cult a personality putting his name and pictures on everything. He also declared the country was living in a “golden age.” Our president follows this path with eerie similarity.

We went to Turkmenistan. Pictures and statues of the president were everywhere. In some places, like our hotel they were required, by law, to display the president’s portrait. When I was there I thought: I hope that tp never finds out about this place.
