#Swordfishtrombones
I learned about Tom Waits from Sports Night and spent a good period obsessed with 'Small Change' and 'swordfishtrombones'

I also remember hearing Swordfishtrombones for the first time.
Blew my tiny mind.

I'm not a gun guy, by any means (never owned one, never plan to) but even so I'm slightly annoyed that they wrote 30.06 wrong.

Swordfishtrombones is probably my 2nd favorite Waits album, after Rain Dogs.

It's a stunning debut—you might argue he didn't better it until Swordfishtrombones. Really hope it makes it into the green list.

I actually like the piano blues crooner 70s Waits stuff best, apart from maybe Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs, but it’s not what most people associate with him anymore

With a listening room all to myself tonight, I played Tom Waits’s “trilogy” in order on vinyl: Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, Frank’s Wild Years. It was transcendent. Would welcome suggestions for similar musical deep dives, any genre welcome.

Swordfishtrombones: On the turntable now. :-)

Great choices! I think Swordfishtrombones is the height of his instrumental work, with three top pieces on there, including Just Another Sucker—one of the most indelible melodies he's ever written.

Tom Waits behöver inte göra några julskivor eftersom alla hans album från och med Swordfishtrombones låter som julskivor. Detta menat som beröm.

"I plugged sixteen shells from a thirty-ought-six
And a black crow snuck through a hole in the sky
So I spent all my buttons on an old pack mule..."

🎶 Swordfishtrombone

"And if you think that you can tell a bigger tale
I swear to God you'd have to tell a lie"

The lyric and subsequent maniacal laugh sum up everything 80s Tom Waits has to offer - unhinged genius.

9. 16 Shells From a Thirty-Ought Six

Swordfishtrombones kicked off the more experimental phase of Tom’ career. The great man opted to use a brake drum & a bell plate for percussion on this🤷‍♂️
