Francesca Woodman was an American photographer known for her black-and-white self-portraits. Despite her short career, which ended with her suicide at the age of 22, Woodman produced over 800 untitled prints. Influenced by Surrealism and Conceptual Art, her work often featured recurring symbolic motifs such as birds, mirrors, and skulls. The artist’s exploration of sexuality and the body is often compared to both Hans Bellmer and Man Ray. Woodman’s work is also characterized by her use of long shutter speed and double exposure, the blurred image creating a sense of movement and urgency, “Am I in the picture? Am I getting in or out of it? I could be a ghost, an animal or a dead body, not just this girl standing on the corner …?” Woodman once stated. Born on April 3, 1958 in Boulder, CO to the artists George and Betty Woodman, she went on to attend the Rhode Island School of Design and traveled to Rome as part of its honors program in 1977. While in Rome, she made some of her most poetic and provocative works. Moving to New York in 1979 to pursue a career in photography, the next two years proved to be troubled for the artist. A lackluster response to her photography and a failed relationship pushed her into a deep depression. The artist jumped to her death from a loft window on January 19, 1981 in New York, NY. Though she had few opportunities to show work during her life, Woodman has been the subject of numerous posthumous solo exhibitions, including “Francesca Woodman. On Being an Angel,” which opened in 2016 at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and 2018s Life in Motion: Egon Schiele/ Francesca Woodman at Tate Liverpool in the United Kingdom.

Jean Arp was a leader in the development of the organic, curving language of biomorphism, which infused Surrealism with forms alluding to growth, fecundity, and the natural world. In the early 1930s, Arp began to translate his abstract style into three-dimensional sculptures, emphasizing the natural processes of metamorphosis in art. The artist often realized his sculptures first in plaster, a medium that responded easily to touch and allowed for the element of chance in the creative process, and later in an edition in different media (often bronze). This sculpture is a unique marble enlargement of Arp’s original plaster. The medium—with its hard, bonelike appearance—emphasizes the human, torsolike forms of Growth.

Carolus Adrianus Maria Thole (1914 – 2000) was a Dutch painter and illustrator born in Bussum, near Amsterdam, and educated at State Drawing School of Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum. His first works were for advertisement and publishing companies, but he also painted glasses and walls. In 1958, Thole moved to Milan, Italy, with his wife and four sons. He worked for Rizzoli publishing before passing to Mondadori in 1960, where he would stay for the next several decades. After several covers for various magazines and books, he became renowned for his covers for the Italian science fiction periodical Urania, where his taste for surrealism and weird sense of humor were the perfect match to the magazine’s speculative content. In the 1980s, Thole contracted an eye disease that limited his ability to work, and the covers to Urania were taken over by Vicente Segrelles and Oscar Chichoni. Karel produced his last cover for the magazine in 1998 and died two years later.

This is the sculpture Torso-Sheaf (Torse Gerbe) by Jean Arp. The sculpture is a well-known example of Arp's sensuous, biomorphic (life-like) forms, which he began creating in the 1930s. It fuses human and vegetal elements, representing a subtly flowing body in a dance-like, twisting movement. Arp was a co-founder of the Dada movement and a significant figure in Surrealism, known for his abstract art that took inspiration from nature. The original work from 1931 exists in multiple versions and materials, including plaster, marble, and bronze. This example is the original in marble in the collection of the Centre Pompidou in Paris.

Jesse Draxler grew up in a rural town in Wisconsin. His family had an automobile repair service and as a child he used to draw cars, trucks and engines for hours with friends. In first grade, Draxler discovered that he was color blind, being red-green color deficient. He studied at the College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, Minnesota. His thesis was on the commodification of subculture through the lens of punk rock, whose primary medium was collage. Draxler began participating in exhibitions in 2012. Jesse Draxler is an artist with an obscure state of mind. He finds his everyday balance in working on his art--in whatever spontaneous sense he's feeling in each moment. There's a dark beautiful mystery in his body of work that's both enticing and gut-wrenching. Currently living in California, Jesse will tell you, I don't pay much attention to the art world, and respectably so because art is his world as he stays locked away in his studio creating abstract wonders. His collage work and paintings will leave a spectator wanting to understand what goes on in Draxler's imaginative mind from the inside out. Imprinted by Einstein's words Jesse's world is filled with acquiring knowledge--and learning you will never know everything in this world--and quite possibly that hunger to want more knowledge every time you gain new knowledge is what keeps Jesse creating and discovering more about himself in each moment.
