~Player failure can drive better stories than success

The main thing is that not everyone has a space to meet and play with others. There is the internet and StartPlayingGames but it’s not the same. If you’re in a small town and want to do it in person you have to hope the players are not toxic, or be willing to drive far.

So there’s three different approaches - one is to go to a local game store and see if they have a society game running. The second is go to an looking for game group online (startplayinggames or r/lfg for instance). The third is roping a bunch of buddies into playing with you.

Outside of the handful of actual commercial businesses, I suspect most designers are talking about compensation as proper attribution and an affiliate link rather than cash.
