#Standardization
Existing private claims processing infrastructure could be contracted to provide processing, which will become VASTLY faster and less expensive, just with forms standardization and a national systems integration.

So forget standardization, and just let each person spell their own way, right? That makes it hard to read other ppl's writing, especially if their variety of English is very different from yours. So there's big problems there too

Yeah, the US is a huge country with very little standardization of curricula (even after NCLB). A lot is still at the discretion of state, county, municipal or school level officials or even individual teachers. Yet I would argue the whole thing is still *spiritually* very American.
I'm sure (in fact the article makes clear) that this isn't purely American. And yet it feels SO American: fake it til you make it, baby. They're not just teaching kids to pretend to read. The schools are pretending to teach reading. The Education entrepreneurs are pretending they've done research...
how did i go so long not knowing we were literally teaching people to read wrong. i knew something wasn't right but jesus christ www.apmreports.org/episode/2019...

"What's the point of standards?"

Is there really a better question to encapsulate how and why USA is the Turd Reich. Standardization is just one of the most important steps in any organized group or activity from grandma's kitchen to governments.
“I’ve been hearing that standards will be eliminated or severely cut back. Bari has told people that she wants to get rid of standards and is shocked that they have so much power. She also asked openly, ‘What’s the point of standards?’” one CBS source said.

the way it works is that panic and/or low test scores become excuses for corporate curricula/standardization, fear and high stakes mean going off-script is disallowed
so many people just have no idea that the literacy crisis is being used as an excuse to rid schools of books

i'm not sure of the right way to resolve it yet but the lack of standardization has been used to justify really poor quality alternatives

it's not actually standardized which is part of the problem. i'm currently working on a proposal to codify an opt-out for telemetry but it's indeed ridiculous that requirements.txt is so load-bearing without standardization and i find it vaguely sinister for reasons that are hard to explain

for sure, old school conservatism (Wendell Berry flavored) had theories of place and local knowledge that were quasi-Anglo or Tolkien in their conceit. But between the speed/convenience of travel to the standardization of highway exits, to the perspective human beings took to their land…it’s gone.

Thank you for honouring my pedantic ass with words to correct/ clarify in an episode about pedantic word nerds, @yourewrongabout.bsky.social!

It was spelled Þe Olde, not Ye.

In the standardization of the English language, the letter Thorn (Þ) for the sound ‘th’ evolved into a ‘y’.
