The SpongeBoost project launched a new database that includes a catalogue of best practices, along with relevant articles and papers, as well as 147 projects and 60 measures. Projects range from large-scale nature reserve restorations to smaller, local measures. www.spongeboost.eu/news/sponge-...

Text: Deiche sollten verhindern, dass Felder und Siedlungen überflutet werden. Ursprünglich artenreiche und vielfältige Auenbereiche dienten nun dem Siedlungsbau oder der Landwirtschaft. Die Unstrut fließt kanalartig ausgebaut durch Ackerlandschaften, lediglich der Randstreifen ist baumloses Grünland. Hier läuft eine Maßnahme in Nationalen Hochwasserschutzprogramm, doch die Widerstände gegen Renaturierung und Deichrückverlegungen sind hier groß.

Unser SpongeBooster 2025, Planar e. V., hat mit viel ehrenamtl. Einsatz und tollen Kooperationen mit Stadt, Kreis & Eigentümern eindrucksvoll die Diemel bei Marsberg entfesselt. Hier einige Eindrücke aus den renaturierten Abschnitten, mit Bildbeschreibung im ALT-Text. #SpongeBoost #LebendigeFlüsse
Zur Preisverleihung und Exkursion kamen viele Stakeholder mit, hier schauen sie auf die Entwicklung einer Gewässerstrecke, wo die Diemel eine wundervolle Abbruchkante geschaffen hat, in der hoffentlich bald die Eisvögel brüten. Im Vordergrund ist der flutende Wasserhahnenfuß erkennbar, der hier Unterstände für Fische bildet. Im Hintergrund eine Kiesinsel, bereits mit viel Bewuchs, hier finden Vögel sichere Brutplätze. Selfie, das zeigt: die Stimmung ist super angesichts eines so tollen Beispiels für Renaturierung. Im Hintergrund ein Flächeneigentümer, die WEPA, und ein Vertreter des Vereins für Natur- und Vogelschutz im Gespräch über die vielen Arten, die sich hier nach der Renaturierung eingefunden haben, darunter geschützte Fischarten wie Groppe und Bachneunauge und die hier typischen Äschen, die sich prächtig erholen. Eine Insel im Flusslauf, das Licht auf der Wasseroberfläche macht die Strömungsvarianzen sichtbar: wo es glitzert, kräuselt sich das Wasser in der stärkeren Strömung, im Strömungsschatten der Insel ist es ruhig, hier wird selbst feiner Sand nicht mehr bewegt und lagert sich ab - eine Sandbank entsteht. Das ist nicht nur charakteristisch für einen gesunden Fluss, so entstehen die vielen unterschiedlichen Lebensräume, in denen große Fische jagen und laichen und Babyfische im warmen, ruhigen Flachwasser aufwachsen können. Auch hier wieder ein verzweigtes Gerinne mit Inseln und ruhigen Zonen. Hier fließt die Diemel weitgehend im Auenlehm. Der Kieskörper wurde an vielen Flüssen ab dem Mittelalter, als in den Mittelgebirgen große Rodungen einsetzten, von Feinmaterial überdeckt. So erst entstanden die fruchtbaren Auelehm-Böden, die heute in den weiten Talräumen so begehrt für den Ackerbau sind. Den Flüssen täte mehr Kies und mehr extensives Grünland statt Ackerbau hingegen gut. Doch Kies und Totholz, an dem Strömungen entstehen, die Feinmaterial zur Seite spülen, bleiben an den vielen Talsperren hängen. Hier sollen darum möglichst auch noch Kiesdepots und Totholz eingebracht werden. Im schmalen Tal der Diemel dominieren glücklicherweise Wiesen. Vielleicht entsteht ja hier auch mal eine naturnahe Auenweide? Angeregt haben wir es natürlich.

🌿 Was wir brauchen, ist echter Schutz für natürliche Wasserspeicher wie Moore und Feuchtgebiete. Diese Ökosysteme speichern Wasser, beugen Dürren & Überschwemmungen vor und sie brauchen endlich konsequenten Schutz.
