#SpeedTree
I’m now seeing a talk about large scale vegetation rendering in Godot, by Karl Bittner.

He mentions there is an open source alternative to speedtree, which he has barely heard mentioned: EZ tree: www.eztree.dev

It even has an in-browser 3D viewer in which you can try different seeds for the trees!

Special thanks to SeaphisCain for pointing this out in the credits of Darkest of Days that @giantbomb.bsky.social has surfaced, but the credits have the PhysX and SpeedTree logos but instead it's just the path to the files that are, apparently, just not on the disc.

I decided to return to making the tutorials on YouTube. The first tutorials will be autumn-style vegetation. I plan to show how to create such a tree in SpeedTree in a simplified form in the upcoming tutorial. 🍂

SpeedTree is basically AI under the current 'anything goes' definition!

my big games journalism white whale is i want to do a deep dive on SpeedTree, but i’m afraid that the video where Ryan Davis asks the guy “how fast are these trees?” is the definitive document on the subject

Thread already seems to acknowledge this, but I'm willing to assume he's referring to shit like Speedtree instead of actual genAI'd art assets

I do get why people are so uneasy about this stuff, but I feel like Kojima is "artistically inclined" enough to avoid falling into the abyss
Hideo Kojima on AI: "I'd like it to handle the tedious tasks that would lower cost and cut down on time, co-creating with AI instead of just using it

It was mislabeled anyway. They used a program that's been around for decades called Speedtree. It was either them being too worried about getting in trouble for not disclosing on Steam, or they wanted to seem like they were using AI stuff to get future funding.

Not me spending all day on leaf detail probably no one will ever see. Only like forty more types of trees to make 🤦

OK, don't use speedtree, noted....
Game development is time travelling to fix bug

Wait until you play games that exist on Windows and Linux that use Speedtree

You'll hear sounds when you're supposed to, instead of 1 second afterwards.

Apologies if it's mentioned elsewhere - how would one assemble these...well, assemblies? Directly in UE (with PCG maybe?)? We previously tried building full geo "nanite" trees in SpeedTree, but at those polycounts it seems unusable.

An update here now that reviews are popping up:

I hear it's just speedtree???

Which is *not* generative AI.

Still the AI disclosure is there so trust your gut here.

But if it's just speedtree then lmao
I was already not interested in The new Hot Shots golf because it's definitely a publisher trying to cash in on a franchise after the devs have all left HOWEVER the fact they're using generative AI in it's development is the icing on the shit cake that is that game.

This is why the “we’ve been using SpeedTree for decades, what’s the difference?” line does not hit at all
A big reason proc gen feels so different to AI in spite of superficial similarities is exactly this!!

Proc Gen systems reflect the interests and creative preferences of the tool makers, whereas AI is catch-all sludge that reflects no specific point of view. It’s not remotely the same!
In case anyone ever asks, I *have* written a material generator and a music generator for Eldritch 2, but that's not AI. That's me taking all the things I personally know about those things, and writing my own tools to make the process a little faster and easier for myself. It's still 100% me, baby.

Thank you! I used SpeedTree since it made creating the clusters and handling texture transfers easier, as everything is done within one software. However, when I'm not using SpeedTree, I usually rely on Substance Designer. I explained the SD workflow better here ➡️(www.artstation.com/blogs/beatri...)

This looks so nice and cozy! Love how you did the foliage, would love to see how (I’m currently trying to learn speedtree myself ^^').

No programmer has made their own tree in ages, what the hell do you think Speedtree is?
