Their breath was soft, almost invisible, their half-closed eyes sucked into a drowning pool of dreaming. Atop a bunk lay a woman in repose, as if painted, her face turned from me, her hand hanging limp over the edge. This was a house of the dead. Its denizens never-living. All those years I had lived beneath the soil, in those cut, festering wells of misery and fear. It was here alone I could feel the soft embrace of the grave.
