I did buy this book at SIGGRAPH though. Looks like it's much cheaper online, haha.

When I exclaimed "it's like buying a textbook in college!" the merchant looked me straight in the eyes and with the flattest tone responded "It *is* a textbook."

그즈음 한국에서 장편 3D CG 애니메이션이 2편이나 제작중이었고, 곧 시행될 주5일 근무제 준비로 격주 토요일을 쉬며, TV광고업계와는 달리 뭔가 좀 일반적인 직장생활을 하는 기분이었다. 아내와 같이 한강 공원으로 피크닉도 가고. 그해 여름 처음 SIGGRAPH 출장도 다녀오고.

연봉 2배 인상으로 다른 TV광고 CG제작 업체로 이직했지만, 1년도 못 버티고 퇴사엔딩. 마침 지인이 일하던, 리눅스 클러스터링 수퍼 컴퓨터를 기상청 등에 납품하면서 동시에 응용 비지니스로 클라우드 렌더링 서비스를 준비하던 스타트업에 CG관련 개발인력으로 조인하게 됐다.

그 당시 한국 광고 CG일이 야근/밤샘/말도 안되는 스케줄, 거기에 나는 또 CG초짜에 미술적 재능도 별로라 많이 힘들었었다. 그렇게 첫 회사에서 3년 6개월 정도 일하면서 결혼도 하고 언젠가 픽사 같은 회사에서 일하고 싶다는 그런 꿈도 갖게 되었다. 그러다가…

Yeah it really is. People have been begging GDC to move somewhere cheaper so people could actually afford to go and they just kept refusing.

I like the way SIGGRAPH does it where every other year it's in LA, and then it travels to another city - I've seen Vancouver and Denver for example.

사실 그 회사의 캐시 카우 부서는, 국민대/홍대 시디과 출신들이 SGI 워크스테이션과 Quantel사의 Henry로 TV광고 CG를 제작하던 부서. SIGGRAPH 출장 등을 통해 해외에는 CG제작 부서에 개발인력이 있음을 알게되어 회사에 계속 개발인력 배치를 요구하던 중 내가 입사한 것

이렇게 대답했을 때 피식 웃으시던 사장님이 기억난다. 지금 생각해도 내가 어떻게 그런 당돌한 답을 할 수 있었는지, 그리고 그런 나를 뽑아주신 사장님도 신기하기만 하다. SK에서 오래 일하시고 나서 동료들과 같이 멀티미디어 벤처를 창업하셨던 분. 나는 그 회사에서 교육용 CD-ROM 등을 개발하는 부서에서 일을 하게 될 줄 알았는데...

Been reading this paper web.cs.ucdavis.edu/~ma/SIGGRAPH... describing an algorithm that draws evenly spaced lines in a vector field, with some private chatgpt math tutoring, i have my own open graph image generator.
