@spiderwebsoftware.bsky.social's Blades of Exile. Since I got a shareware CD with it, me and my school friend were stunned by how vast the game was, especially for something I could run in my old potato PC

To this day pictures and the intro of that game bring me warm feelings

hard to decide on an era, but I have a weird affinity for some late 90s blockbuster rentals, and random DOS shareware that came on my 386

The full version of this is out today. Try the demo - I'm pretty sure saves carry into the full version, and you'll probably need at least 3-4 full runs to see everything. It's basically an old-school Shareware Version. The entire first episode.
Million Depth isn't even out until next week but it's already on my list because the demo is ENORMOUS (1/3rd of the game) and one of the most creative roguelites I've played.

Real-time-with-pause 'bump' combat where you control yourself and your customizable weapon-drone simultaneously. Just try it
Million Depth on Steam
Craft original weapons and engage in strategic time-freezing battles as you dive into the million-floor deep underground world of this deep-diving action strategy game.

Reminds me of the Windows 3.1 file selection dialog, so definitely antiquated. I think I have seen this before, a long time ago in one of those shareware utility bundles.

xD I love it so much, it's like, the mascot of the shareware scene.

Ah the joys of a 100 shareware games on CD for £10

Playing the Descent demo from some bargain-bin shareware disks in 1995 was a gamechanger for me

OLDER FURRIES HELP ME OUT HERE!

While thrifting, I found this "Best of" shareware CD. One of the CDs labeled "Sights & Sounds" contained the below photo! it was labeled "FURRYFAM" The copyright is 1994, I'm so curious as to where this came from. If this looks familiar to anyone please let me know!

Ah fair. I think it's mainly because Nintendo is sort of a last bastion of physical games in general. Nobody gives a fuck about Xbox, PC has always had shareware and digital versions, and the people who complained about it on PS4/5 moved to Nintendo as a result.

The original Command & Conquer when I first played it back in 1997. Also a load of Apogee shareware games in the early/mid 90s because hooray 90s kids.

....I had a friend who had Outlaws shareware demo as a kid. we played that same stage for hours

Took me AGES to dig this up, I knew I preserved it but I have so many backups. This my first reviewed Shareware game from early 1997 (aged 16). I'd love to frame it but it does look a bit gaudy 😂

Two blasts from the past. 1, Duke Nukem and 2, Shareware! lol

I remember seeing DN for the first time and being blown away by the graphics and game. Would love to play it again.

Giving DUKE NUKUM I another shot because I only ever finished the shareware episode

How about some morbid trivia? It involves the ZIP file format and peppermint schnapps. The ZIP format was created by Phil Katz and became popular in the 90's with his pkzip shareware utilities. Dude made millions on it. Still lived with his mom though at age 37 which is as old as he got...

The first CD-ROM drive we owned in this family came with a Compton's Encyclopedia, an "Aztech Super Games" shareware compilation, the talkie version of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, and a copy of Myst, among other things. I still have most of those.
