It's very weird reading the Shahnameh and finding that the Achaemenids just don't feature in it because nobody in 1st millennium Iran remembered they had ever been a thing.
Also nobody’s nationalism really “goes back five millennia” because nationalism is a pretty recent idea. But even talking in terms of perceived historical inheritance what are they referring to here? Achaemenids are like 6th century BC.
Thanks to NPR for explaining that due to the ancient, mysterious culture of Persia, Iranians "don't like to be attacked" npr.org/2025/06/16/n...

If you know anything about Iran, if you've read the Shahnameh - the essence of Iranian identity - then you'll know that Iran will never surrender.

The story of Bijan and Manijeh is a famous love story from Ferdowsi's Shahnameh, Persian Book of Kings
It tells of the tragic love between Bijan, a brave Iranian knight, and Manijeh, the daughter of Afrasiab, the Turanian king and Iran's enemy, despite their nations' animosity

Realized I never posted this piece from last year.
It was for a project and inspired by the #Simurgh. A mythical bird from Persian mythology.
Said to be as old as time, the Simurgh raised heroes, healed the sick. My take on a timeless legend. 🕊✨ #MythologyArt #Shahnameh #Illustration #digitalart

For my own mental health I'm going to be avoiding the internet for the rest of the night.
Instead, I'm going to be in Ancient Persia reading more of the Shahnameh. I'm at the part where Alexander the Great (Sekandar) makes his appearance.

I’m two thirds of the way through reading aloud Shahnameh, the Persian epic poem, to my daughter. It’s almost a thousand pages and we started in January. Gonna take a break to read her a different book, then we will bring the epic to a close in the next few months!

was thinking how the story of Zahhāk takes places way before Achaemenids, but since the shahnameh was written after the Muslim conquest, the people in the story are depicted dressed in Turco-Persian fashion, so actually they would have a very different look
