#ServiceStandard
As a public servant, I write weekly notes to let people see what I do.

I had a busy week #184:
• publishing a blog post on the #designSystem strategy
• co-running a #ServiceStandard application workshop with local gov’t
• inspecting the sludge audit tool
• giving a talk on technology shifts

#ServiceStandard in practice:

Applying for a hunting permit 🦌
Applying for a fishing license 🎣

— as services in the State of Brandenburg

We are looking today at questions like:

Where are the teams already meeting Service Standard points? What’s to do where?

These practice check-ins are brill

I think we are well-positioned to tie these things together from the German #ServiceStandard work streams.

But I would love to have more space for collective international sense-making around measuring quality of outcomes.

It needs more brains and perspectives.

The #ServiceStandard codifies how service teams should work when building services.

The service quality criteria describe the attributes of what the service teams produce.

Service teams need to know how to progress and what the end goal should look like.

These need to be connected frameworks

As part of the celebration, we took a picture of people carrying the German #ServiceStandard for the past 5 years.

Josephine was the responsible policy officer during its inception in 2020.

@vpatermann.bsky.social supported it as a sounding board member.

Ralf is the steering policy officer today.

As a public servant, I write weekly notes to let people see what I do.

As the #ServiceStandard regulation came into effect this week, I co-led a workshop at #SCCON25 to introduce it to more people and help them understand potential challenges associated with it.

I also welcomed a new designer.

Thanks to @benaldo.bsky.social and team for their ongoing work.

As we learned a few years ago: The global impact of the UK #ServiceStandard is significant.

I am grateful for the opportunity to piggyback on well-tested material.

The GOV.UK Service Manual content has been published under the Open Government Licence 3.0, which allows reuse with attribution.

We are massively grateful for this work in the open approach.

It enables us to enhance the handbook section of the German #ServiceStandard and expedite our work.

The German #ServiceStandard has its binding policy.

Yesterday, the ‘Regulation on standards for online access to administrative services’ was officially published, signed by Minister Wildberger.

It’s the law of the land now.

May services get better from here.

What are we doing to raise the quality of public services in Germany broadly?

With @egovpod.bsky.social, BMDS policy officer Ralf Käck and I spoke about the German #ServiceStandard:

What is it?

How did we co-create it?

How do we support service teams?

Is it mandatory?

Podcast recorded: @egovpod.bsky.social invited @bmi.bund.de’s Ralf Käck and me to talk about the German #ServiceStandard, its (re)creation and application.

Introducing the Service Standard to even more people working on public services will always be a task.

This work will never be done.

Onwards!

Doing bits of my “two hours every six weeks”* — in a remote user research session and usability test with a service team member from the City State of Hamburg who is seeing and using the new #ServiceStandard page for the first time.

Great observations!

Things aren’t measured, things are duplicated, and there’s little collaboration between parts of the public sector.

The German Federal Court of Auditors (BRH) publishes a harsh review of the state of digital.

It suggests 3 things covered in the #ServiceStandard: measure, collaborate and reuse

An excellent and overlooked proposal for more service quality transparency about how well services met the #ServiceStandard in the past.

I will investigate how much of this we can use to implement the German equivalent.

Thank you for all your work on this, dear @vickytnz.bsky.social! 💔

Currently services have a phase banner that says the phase and gives a feedback link - this was important in the early days of GOV.UK but now maybe less so. Meanwhile:
