John Payne can do no wrong. I'm gonna be bummed when I finally get to the end of his Trek gallery.

Beta Starship Spotlight
USS Chaffee

This lovely physical model by John Payne manages to plant a flag equidistant between 3 of the 4 TMP movie era Starfleet ships: Constitution Refit, Miranda, and Oberth. Truly a visually fetching achievement!

I had BoBW on VHS as a kid and watched it probably more than any of the Trek movies I had on VHS.

If you haven't checked out the (now complete!) Wolf 359 Massacre videos, WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE!?!

The first image of the Asia is a model made for Starfleet Command that I remember modding into my copy of the game back in college days. I sunk many hours adding tons of custom ships into Starfleet Command II: Empires at War.

#SaturdayStarshipRewind
Beta Starship Spotlight
Asia-Class Cruiser

The next exhibit in Okazaki's Starfleet Museum is a proto-Constitution that's also appeared in many other places around the Star Trek Beta Canon.

The Asia really works directly backwards from the original TOS form without adding much on its own.

Like most of the other SW readers in the later oughts, the Darth Caedus arc was not my fav. Some of the ships from that series were pretty neat, like the Aleph and especially the eponymous Ship!

I do love the idea of Starfleet producing prototypes aping the designs of their adversaries just to see if there's some special sauce there.

#SaturdayStarshipRewind
Beta Starship Spotlight
Peregrine-Class Light Cruiser

This kitbash from John Payne starts from an intriguing question to Starfleet R&D: were the Romulans onto something with their warp field geometry?

The specific font and coloration of a Jackills Data Sheet cover creates a flood of dopamine in my brain that few illegal drugs can match.

#SaturdayStarshipRewind
Beta Starship Spotlight
Prowler-Class Interceptor

This update to the classic Saladin/Hermes layout uses Ambassador parts to create a svelte little ship.

I definitely remember seeing this purple Jackill's Data Sheet at a con in the 90's, seeing printed material for non-canon ships was the coolest!

Flavor text for the FASA tabletop starship combat game remains one of the most fun and underutilized sources of Trek microfiction out there.

Beta Starship Spotlight
Klingon D-51 Starstorm-Class Destroyer

The flavor text for the FASA tabletop starship combat game is always an endless source of Trek fun. I initially looked at this derpy Klingon warship and chuckled, but upon further reading it turns out D-51 deserves some respect.

John Payne really asked the question:

"What if the Federation-Class, which is already pretty extra, was even more extra in every way?" and then he literally built it.

#SaturdayStarshipRewind
Beta Starship Spotlight
USS Belisarius

This John Payne model (named for the Byzantine general) smashes a Miranda-Class primary hull up against a Belknap-type engineering section in a dreadnought format that would have dominated the TMP-era battlefield.

Buckle up space fans cuz it's time for your weekly #SaturdayStarshipRewind looking back at some of the spaceships I looked this past week in my #BetaStarshipSpotlight posts as well as others, like this one!

We've since gotten a better look at Athena, she's more vertical than implied in this pic.
I think the USS Athena is built like the new comm badges.

and 3 nacelles are fine! and I think detached nacelles were neat, 32nd century tech should be unconventional

I really like the idea that these early patrol ships had warp drives, but only to react to in-system threats quickly; they didn't have the endurance for interstellar trips.
Beta Starship Spotlight
Archer-Class and Curran-Class System Patrol Ships

These two pint-sized warships from Masao Okazaki's Starfleet Museum exemplify one of the problems of early Starfleet: how to defend so many new, far-flung colonies?

Archer and later Curran were the answer!

I like the idea that the major UFP member worlds build their own variations of starships using some basic building blocks from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers and adding their own indigenous flare.
Beta Starship Spotlight
Talas-Class Destroyer

I found this unique TOS DD in the FASA files, what a way to add bulk to a tiny TOS saucer!

At first I thought the ship was named after a city in Kyrgyzstan until a cursory Binging reminded me of the namesake Andorian character from 2 episodes of ENT.
July 19, 2025 at 11:51 PM
I love how consistently across beta canon tucked-in warp nacelles are a feature of Andorian origin; it would have been neat to see that reflected in ENT.

#SaturdayStarshipRewind
Beta Starship Spotlight
Royal Andor-Class Liner

I like how this luxury cruiser is simultaneously alien and familiar, distinctly Federation and yet definitely not Starfleet. It keeps the tucked in nacelle configuration that is characteristic of Andorian-designed and built starships.

If you've never seen the original V then do yourself a favor, it is pinnacle 80's TV scifi goodness.

It really is like a series of A-Team episodes with lasers and pseudo-Gorn, including all the boring 80's dialogue scenes!

Buckle up everyone, #SaturdayStarshipRewind posts will start dropping throughout the day today as I start my weekly look back at the art I showcased in the #BetaStarshipSpotlight

First up: some really cool Death Star blueprints that I found on reddit!
EU Starship Spotlight
Death Star RPG Plans

I found these new/old Death Star layouts I'd never found before this evening, I believe they're from one of the the Star Wars RPG supplements.

The small craft overview oddly mislabels the familiar Carrack-Class Light Cruiser as an "Assault Shuttle".

Relics was a TNG ep I had on VHS as a lad so the image of the Jenolan crashed onto the surface of Dyson Sphere is forever etched into my subconscious.

#SaturdayStarshipRewind
Beta Starship Spotlight
Victoria-Class Transport

Victoria is a tidy approximation of a TOS-era Sydney-Class aka the USS Jenolan, which crashed onto a Dyson Sphere and held a Scotsman in its transporter buffer for a long time.

FYI the original Jenolan was a reuse of the TMP Executive Shuttle model.

Good morning and welcome to a big ol' #SaturdayStarshipRewind

I've been working nights on and off the past 2 weeks supporting a big event at my school so the posts have been maybe a lil wonky, and I skipped last weekend's rewind as I was pretty exhausted.

So buckle up, there's a lot of spaceships!
Drop your favorite ship that never gets talked about

I love it when the Trek characters are also big nerds about the Trek ships.

La'an saying she loves grapplers might be one of my top 5 moments in Star Trek.

"Hey, we saw you from across the bar and really dig your vibe."
August 30, 2025 at 11:42 PM
What a heckin chonker. The beefy head on this cruiser probably housed an assortment of shady tactic systems the Andorians probably kept close to the vest.

I could see how the Tellarites and Vulcans wouldn't like these showing up randomly after a century of peace lol

#saturdaystarshiprewind
Beta Starship Spotlight
Andorian Maar Zhiin-Class Cruiser

The exact status and capabilities of the fleets of the various Federation member worlds has always been am interesting and neglected topic, until Lower Decks at least!

Maar Zhiin here blends elements from ENT and TOS with a fun backstory.

Howdy and welcome back for another #SaturdayStarshipRewind looking back at the goofy spaceships this microblog hath blogged over the past fortnight.

Any of Arik's ships here would make interesting settings for Star Trek RPG shenanigans, Habitat seems like a good hero ship in particular.
Beta Starship Spotlight
Ships of Arik Deylan

Arik has a number of interesting Starfleet designs leaning more in the martial direction and favoring TMP-era components.

Is a "Heavy Corvette" an oxymoron? Maybe, but it's a neat ship to look at!

I know that photon torpedo launchers are not real and even if they were they wouldn't necessarily need a linear acceleration track but boy the curved photon battery on this little ship does just seems a lil too funky to me.
