I don't want to wake up to find us floundering in a reef on the morrow." He stalked away, and Kallista glared at his back. Again. He'd said Iona's name wrong again. "You see?" Iona sighed behind her. "Indeed I do. Indeed I do. That's two more black marks in his report, from one short conversation." She nodded farewell to Iona. "We'd best not linger, fellow fishwife." Iona cackled. "You're the only one I'll let get away with that."

Photo is a block of text taken from the book "A Tchao In Ilimak". It reads: Chapter 1 East of the Ria Limash sat on the eastern border of Brachao. It was surrounded almost completely by mountains, forests, or ocean; protected from all sides against any who would try to invade. Protected also, one might think, from any who would try to escape. The Ria Mountains, which served as the border between the two nations, were tall, rocky, sharp, and dangerous to travel in summer heat, winter snow, or spring and autumn rains. The best way to traverse these fearsome peaks would be through the havens and tunnels, carved lifetimes ago by the Usara Bash of Limash and the easternmost Tchao of Brachao. These safe-ways were once a joint project, meant to serve as a long-withstanding testament to the friendship of Tchao and Bash, like the Usara themselves: an entire tribe, though technically more Bash than Tchao, born of families from both sides of the mountains. But that was long ago. Now, with the Bash distracted by wars, and the Tchao afraid of the harsh punishments given to those who displease the Eldest Katalo, their once strong friendship was fading like an old memory. The relationship between them, once bright as an evening fire, was now dim as morning embers. Photo is a temporary book cover. A small bi-pedal chicken-like creature with a lizard's tail, covered in feathers that mirrored the colors of its lush and leafy environment, emerged from the thicket. It stood smaller than Ciez and Cedrik, barely a two feet tall and roughly three feet long from head to tail. "That's not a chicken, is it?" Ciez asked rhetorically. "I don't know what that is." Oakengrove added. He knelt down and reached out his hand to draw its attention. The creature's head tilted and stared at him. Its eyes were on the side of its head. "Come here little one, I'm a friend." Then another jumped out beside the first. Then another and another and another. Within a matter of seconds, one became eight, then twelve, then twenty. Oakengrove slowly stood up and pulled his hand back to his side. Both Cedrik and Ciez took several steps toward Oakengrove's side, using him as a body shield. The three of them exchanged moderately concerned looks betwixt each other. The hoard of chicken lizards casually hopped toward them. Oakengrove grew his vine whip and cracked it before the hoard. It seemed to be enough. The loud crack spooked all of them and they scattered back into the bushes. Ciez stepped out and looked up at the treant. "What in the hell was that?" "I'm wondering the same thing. That's not normal pack-hunting behavior. Were they sizing us up?" Cedrik inquired. "Possibility does exist. However, given their size, I don't think they're pack hunters. I think it might have been a territorial display rather. Given their small elongated mouths and tiny teeth, I think they're carrion feeders." Oakengrove stated with little else to back it up. Studying wildlife, ironically, wasn't his forte.

He didn't see himself going back to sleep, and there was nothing to do, so he rolled up his blanket and crossed his legs with his back against Kortenze's pallet, to wait out the time staring at the empty blackness between his eyes and his lap. He would have much rathered pace, or go outside into the fresh air, but he didn't want to disturb Kortenze, and anyone who didn't guard a vulnerable fellow blood-mage should still be a child in the dark-forest. That thought brought resentment to Viddor's mind. He didn't like comparing himself to being childish. He didn't like how Kortenze treated him like a child. And yet it was true. He was dangerously unsure of himself, and it was eating away at the confidence behind every vow he'd made. Of course, Kortenze also thinks I'm childish because I'm hopeful. And that's something we all should be. He knew he wouldn't trade away his belief in love and healing for the confidence that adults had. He just wanted to be both the best of what was childish and the best of what was grown up.

It wouldn't be the last time. But for the moment, it felt appropriate to rest her head against the front door and wish the house a pleasant existence without her. She had rejoiced in its cosy bounds as a new bride. A place to call her own. A place for raising a family. It was supposed to be home forever. And now... Goodness knew, it would have a hard time remaining clean and homely with just Myron caring for it. But maybe the nanny would treat it right. "Be well," she told the house, then tapped the door and pushed off of it.

The street at her feet glowed with the reflection of lights. She glanced up and found herself by a cathedral. Funny, that it should be a cathedral, stopping her, holding her attention. If it weren't for the Saints keeping her on this path, she might be putting her children to bed right now. Even if it didn't make much sense to her, this all had to mean something in the long run. She steeled herself to turn uphill. "Prrrp!" came a familiar chirp. Geni's gaze snapped to the stairs of the cathedral. Agoraeus sat in front of the double doors, unmistakable in his proud fluffy mane and large paws primly set before him. Geni laughed under her breath, and lugged her way over to him.  "What is it, old man? You think I ought to pray before going to see my mother?" She looked up at the stained glass windows above the door. The light was so warm. "You're probably right." He led her in, his tail a triumphant flag as he sauntered between the pews. Geni followed until he came to a stop nearer the front, then slipped into the pew to her right. Her hands and shoulders were grateful for the rest when she put her burdens down, and her chilled fingers met each other like an embrace in front of her chest.

Been writing some scenes in the Pyra and Ronan story, one generation after ANOD. I'm starting to have an idea where the story is going. Right now I'd say it's a weird YA-ish semi-dystopian travel story.
Our girl Pyra does know how to complicate getting home though...
‘And what now?’ Ronan looked at the wilderness in front of them. Suddenly he felt a lot more insecure when he saw nothing but giant oaks and birches everywhere, through which natural paths seemed to crisscross each other. ‘Oh, eh, we’ll get through it? It’s an easy walk with those grassy paths,’ Pyra said, ‘we have sleeping bags, there’s enough edible stuff growing here. An I’ve had enough wilderness classes.’ ‘Pyra, it’s dangerous here. There could be bears, or panthers.’ ‘Nation Panthers don’t actually attack humans if you don’t provoke them, and the only bears here are black bears. They’re mostly harmless too, not like the man-eating grolar-pizzlies in the North. Plus I have a stunner. They work on that size of animals too, not just on annoying men.’ She grinned and took the map. ‘And we won’t have to sleep outside, don’t worry. It’s only a few hours to the male Ghost Town community. They will help us there. Look, here it is: Oakling Project community.’ ‘We should have waited with that car on someone to repair it. It would have been safer.’ ‘Come on, this is cooler. I don’t want to be home yet. If you go on adventures, you have go all the way!’ He looked from the light dotted lines on the map to the strange pathways in between the trees, which were overgrown with small lawn-like grass. ‘So who do you think made these? I don’t think the outlaws would make so many of them in in such random patterns.’ ‘Some sort of Animal then?’

"Well, if you'd at least consulted me or your father before dropping this unwelcome news in our laps, maybe we would have counselled you to greater caution. I have been warning you for months that there's a morality craze sweeping the city. It's hardly my fault you ignored me on that count."

After a short silence she spoke again. “Since you're here, will you tell me what you never told my husband? Why didn't Looccup rescue?” Lawcket turned back to face her. “I didn't have time to explain the details then. Looccup used to be a secret. Otherwise everyone would have heard talk about a dragon by now. You can think I'm crazy, but my freedom, even my life, weren't worth the risk of what I thought could happen to my family, to our whole village, even to Looccup.” Indeena's eyes widened, her lips parting. Her words were halting when they finally came out. “You don't believe Looccup is powerful enough to protect herself.” Lawcket's eyes dropped to the twig he was still rolling between his fingers. “I honestly don't know. I wish I did, but I don't. “This morning she surprised me. She might be much more powerful than I know, but she doesn't know until she's done it. I don't want to find out.” He looked Indeena in the eyes. “I still feel like I'd rather die than find out.”

And with that, she left, with the house half in darkness, nothing tidied away like it usually would have been, dishes unwashed from the children's meal, and no dinner ready for Geni. Hunger warred with tears, but neither won, because Timon popped his head out from the top of the stairwell. "Mother, since Father isn't coming home tonight, you need to read us five more stories. I won't sleep until I have exactly five more stories." Geni placed her work bag in the nook, and exhaled. "Five stories. Yes, I suppose I have five stories in me. Coming up." She wrenched her smile in place and swallowed whatever it was she was feeling away for later, not even wanting to name any part of it until the children were in bed and she could eat, wash, and presumably cry and scream into her pillow given this new and incredibly frustrating development. How on Ao was she supposed to get through the week without Helena?  No, no, no. She needed to sort that out later. For now, the children. She ascended the stairs, donning motherhood like a mask.

Added this bit in some revisions I worked on this week.
She nods as she stuffs another bite of French toast in her mouth. There's a bit of syrup on her upper lip and I so badly want to lean over and wipe it off. Or lick it off. Oh my god, Freja, no, you cannot think those thoughts. I have to discreetly pinch myself under the table to stop myself from reacting as she moans at the taste of her meal.
