Mahin Bānū Sultan, better known as Princess Sulțānum, or Shahzada Sultanim (1519–1562), was a Safavid princess of Iran, the daughter of Shah Ismail I and Tajlu Khanum.
She was the youngest sister of Tahmasp I. She had a big influence on the reign of her brother and acted as his political adviser.

Rug of the Day

Detail from an old carpet of my acquaintance. Identified by AI as, variously, an Anatolian rug, a Safavid textile or a piece of embroidered canvas work. What do you think?

In NY, visiting the MetMuseum. Seeing in person the stunning Persian painting and calligraphy that @willdalrymple.bsky.social and @anitaanand.bsky.social spoke about in podcasts about Shirin, etc.

Means so much more after hearing about it from my favorite podcast

Redhelm Dynasty: An action-adventure platformer with hand-drawn 2D graphics in which you play as King Ismail, the first shah of Safavid Iran. I guess that makes this a work of historical fiction?

Persian language in 17th Century CE

17th Century Persian functioned as a transregional chancery and literary language. Safavid Iran, Mughal empire and Central Asian khanates used it officially; it persisted as a minority and commercial tongue on Ottoman frontier, in Caucasus and across Indian Ocean

The model garment, V&A 173-1869 is a Safavid Persian design. I am recreating that.

France is notably smaller in this history, Persia is still under the Abbasids, but the Safavid movement is probably growing in power, or something close to them. Japan was pretty much a backwater IRL in 1500, but I've been fooling with the kamikaze, and they or the Manchu need to cross the sea

Fun Fact!

Did you know the Safavid Empire/Dynasty had organized more than 125 mints throughout its 250 year reign?

I just today became familiar with 15th century Safavid piece "The Court of Gayumars" and it has really made my day. It genuinely looks like a Pure Land.

New silk scarf releasing VERY soon, illustrated by Guest Artist Arlo Teague.

The design pays homage to an illustration made during the Safavid Period of Persia (modern day Iran). The border is dedicated to falconry, some of the oldest records and artwork of which are from the Middle East.

This morning I fully released the panel from the frame.

As the fabric relaxes, the scrollwork rises, defining space and drawing the eye.

The motifs pop up from the linen, emulating stumpwork - but there is no padding here, just the silk itself
