A failed UCP candidate is suing @pressprogress.ca for reporting and quoting things she said.

With no anti-SLAPP protection in Alberta, they've been drawn into a long, costly legal battle.

If you believe in accountability and a free press, and can spare it, give them your support.
@pressprogress.ca needs your solidarity and support right now more than ever

We’re raising money to pay our legal bills – and to be blunt, we’re going to need a lot of help

If you’re able, please help us out and support our Journalism Defence Fund:

I missed this Michael Wolff suit against Melania Trump. It purports to be a lawsuit under NY’s quite robust anti-SLAPP statute, which allows you to sue someone who has brought a SLAPP against you.

But I am doubtful that it works.

In other provinces, journalists can use anti-SLAPP legislation to challenge lawsuits when they believe they are groundless or undermine the public interest

Alberta has no such laws, leaving journalists vulnerable to long and expensive legal battles

I believe that is fundamentally bad for democracy

9/ Given the craven behaviour of the BBC Board, it's probably too much to hope that it will respond to Donald Trump's threat of a $1 billion SLAPP suit in the same way that Private Eye responded to a crook threatening to sue them: f*** off.

The American crime boss is trying to extort our state broadcaster with a threat of SLAPP?

The response in Arkell v. Pressdram seems appropriate.

Åja, så NÅ skal BBC tvinges til å beklage overfor en politiker. Det slapp de heldigvis da de i lang tid klistret antisemittisme til Jeremy Corbyn og bidro sterkt til at Boris Johnson vant valget i 2019

Let me guess, a SLAPP from a transphobe with deep pockets?

Would I be right?

Sigh. To be defimation surely you have to name the person, and it be inaccurate.

This is such a SLAPP
November 9, 2025 at 2:18 PM
There's a reason for that. Fossil fuels love a good SLAPP.

/8 Postscript: Now that I think of it, Melania Trump probably has an action under NY’s anti-SLAPP law for suing her for a threat letter.

I wonder if the lack of an anti-SLAPP law in Alberta may have something to do with the Calgary Herald pulling @guyfelicella.bsky.social’s op-ed piece, which was not in any way defamatory or questionable

If AB had anti-SLAPP legislation like we do here in BC, this case would be shut down quickly and cheaply.

An important demonstration of the gaping chasm in protection without universal or federal anti-SLAPP laws.

@lukelebrun.ca and @pressprogress.ca are at risk cause they are in Alberta. Free speech protections shouldn't be a post code lottery
Hi Bluesky 👋

Small life update: I’m at the centre of a multimillion dollar lawsuit in Alberta launched by a failed candidate for Jason Kenney’s UCP

It may be the longest and most expensive media trial in Canadian history

I’m ready to go public about it and I want to share more details with you 🧵

BC's anti-SLAPP legislation was critical to keeping a meritless lawsuit @torimarlan.bsky.social and I faced to the "affordable" sum of ~$50k in legal fees. Journalists like Luke not protected by these laws have much higher exposure — even when, like us, they did nothing wrong.

If anything, those of us who pushed for such a reckoning have been punished more than the actual perpetrators.

I spent over a year muzzled in SLAPP litigation for the high crime of... saying I believed a state senator's accuser.

The senator sued us activists for defamation.
When people talk about the excesses of MeToo, they have to lie, because the reality is that there was no massive social reckoning forcing people to believe survivors or hold perpetrators accountable. In fact, there has been a significant backsliding and new punishments in rejection of MeToo
