What is causing seasonal strandings of Kemp's ridley #seaturtles in N Gulf of Mexico? Elizabeth Bevin of U of Miami deployed satellite tags on drifters to analyze if carcasses recovered on the mainland may come from farther offshore than previously modeled. Also compared w/ fisheries. #serstm2025

Florida's #seaturtles are impacted by trap bycatch. Species are impacted differently, by size, age class, fishery location, mortality rate. Rachel Smith of FL Cooperative Research Unit used a mixed methods approach involving looking at #stranding data and interviewing stakeholders. #serstm2025

"Sea turtle hearing sensitivity improves as temperature increases," found Charles Muirhead of @duke-university.bsky.social. Fascinating research with implications for how well #seaturtles can respond to acoustic threats in different water temps. Some of the work happened at #KBSTRRC! #serstm2025

"Have hope.... Have heart.... Be thankful and share the gratitude." We are grateful to you, Blair Witherington, #InwaterResearchGroup for your provocative questions and inspirational talk about our #seaturtle #conservation journey at #serstm2025. 👏🐢💚

Over washed loggerhead #seaturtle nests in North Carolina do better than those in Alabama, despite more frequent wave exposure. Matt Ware of FGCU compared over wash days between the two states and found that tolerance to inundation may vary by population in #loggerheads. #serstm2025

Satellite telemetry data from nonrelated studies can also inform decisions about off-shore wind. Sue Barco presented on behalf of the #seaturtle working group of the Regional Wildlife Science Collaborative for #offshorewind. Contribute you ideas:

In one East Central Florida study, "the severity of crabs and washout impacts are increasing over time." Interesting research by Jeena Prasertium, UCF Student. #serstm2025 #seaturtles #nesting #serstn #SERSTM

Dr. Karen Bjorndal was presented with her #SERSTM2025 Lifetime Achievement Award by Ray Carthy and Blair Witherington in Gainesville this weekend at a gathering to honor her retirement from the University of Florida last month.

Higher incubation temperatures are resulting in physiologic shifts such as dehydration, inflammation at emergence of leatherback hatchlings and for 4+ weeks afterwards. Samantha Kuschke of FAU discussed impacts of rising incubation temperatures on #leatherback #seaturtle neonate health. #serstm2025

"A common thread unites us all: our mission to conserve sea turtles." Blair Witherington of #InwaterResearchGroup opened his keynote address at #serstm2025 reminding us that we are all part of a #seaturtle #community. #SERSTM #serstn

The Key West National Wildlife Refuge appears to serve as a recruitment site for juvenile #hawksbill #seaturtles. Interesting project by Larry Wood of National Save the Sea Turtle Foundation studying these elusive turtles. #serstm2025

New loggerhead turtle females in the southeast US exhibit lower site fidelity than experienced mothers. Very cool DNA work by Kristina Shamlin, Shamblin Lab at UGA. #KBSTRRC contributes data from #TopsailIsland #nesting #loggerhead #seaturtles to this project. #nesting #serstm2025

Satellite tags applied to nesting female #loggerhead #seaturtles allowed Paul Hillebrand & the Bald Head Island Conservancy team to look at habitat use and movement post nesting. Comparison with proposed BOEM #offshorewind sites showed minimal use of those areas. Love seeing the tracks! #serstm2025

Be patient, persistent, and involve stakeholders when working to improve local ordinances about #seaturtle protection (e.g., #wildlifefriendlylighting). Emily Wooley of Sea Turtle Conservancy shared the process of updating ordinances and lessons learned. STC is ready to help! #serstm2025

So much to learn from #seaturtle #DNA! Brian Shamblin of shared additional data about new vs experienced #loggerhead moms. Cape Romain NWR, SC is an important #nesting site. Florida turtles may be driving recruitment of new females at the leading edge of the nesting range. #serstm2025

"Infertility makes up about 3% of egg failure in leatherback turtle nests." Emily Turla, FAU grad student, investigated fertility rates of #leatherback #seaturtles in southeast Florida. #serstm2025 #serstn #SERSTM #nesting

"Late season nests have lower reproductive success but still produce hatchlings." Interesting research by Merope Moonstone, student at #UCF. #serstm2025 #seaturtles #nesting #serstn #SERSTM

I'm happy to share that the spatial component of my dissertation work on 'lost years' sea turtles is out now!

If you're attending #SERSTM2025 this week, I'll be presenting the highlights in the #MovementEcology session this afternoon. 🌊🐢🗺️

Slower vessel speeds save sea turtles! Trenton Aguilar of UF presented research on how #vesselstrikes impact #seaturtle populations. It's a simple thing and makes a huge difference - to turtles and lots of other marine wildlife. #serstm2025 #serstn #SERSTM

"Before sea turtle science, before policy & law, our feelings about sea turtles prompted our efforts to protect them." Blair Witherington, #InwaterResearchGroup. He gave a shoutout to these pioneering #turtleladies who inspired love of #seaturtles. 👏🐢👏 To that list we add #JeanBeasley. #serstm2025

Loggerhead #seaturtles use magnetic fields for navigation. Ken Lohmann and colleagues found that #loggerheads can learn to associate food with the magnetic signatures of specific geographic regions. Further, the turtles can retain this info for at least 4 months. Wow! #serstm2025
February 5, 2025 at 10:22 PM
Satellite tagging of #leatherback #seaturtles lends insight into habitat use. Mitchell Rider of U of Miami developed a model looking at core habitat. #serstm2025
