🛰️ Satellites and ground-based monitors can measure pollutants in the air but cannot infer their sources directly; pollutants may have blown downwind or reacted away. During my PhD, I developed CHEEREIO (cheere.io), free software which tracks pollution back to its source using Bayesian optimization.

The space debris from prior failed launches and unkept satellites is making it harder to use space as a resource.

These are the kinds of analogies we have, that are quite literal. The oligarchs messes are keeping us from liberation.

righttttttt lol it causes power grid disruptions, communication interference with the satellites, there’s high altitude risks dealing with radiation, and more.
I’m not sure how strong it has to be to really do this but these lights were seen damn near everywhere so…

Evidence suggests the Amazon and northern hemisphere forests are weakening carbon sinks, with some areas now emitting more carbon than they absorb. ESA satellites track these shifts as leaders gather for #COP30. Only 235 gigatonnes left in our carbon budget. climate.esa.int/en/news-even...

"When fast-moving particles and plasma slam into Earth's magnetic field, they can temporarily disrupt the power grid. Space weather can also interfere with air traffic control radio and satellites in orbit. Severe storms are capable of scrambling other radio and GPS communications."
Space forecasters say severe solar storms could hit Earth and trigger auroras
The sun has burped out bursts of energy called coronal mass ejections that could reach Earth Tuesday night. Forecasters said the vibrant displays could be visible across much of the northern U.S.

An outer space sound will be heard in the RAC Rally, which began last night. The sound is the “beep beep” signal given out by satellites. It will be heard in the Sunbeam Alpine driven by six foot plus Ian “Tiny” Lewis.

With the greatest possible respect for Mary Shelley, whose imaginative template gave us so much—including Gojira and Jurassic Park—other ways exist to view scientific endeavour.

I’m rather glad we have general anesthesia, weather satellites, vaccines, airplanes, and contact lenses.
