Upon touchdown the main landing gear collapsed followed by a runway excursion. The aircraft was destroyed by a post-crash fire. All the occupants including 26 passengers and 3 crew members evacuated safely.

The Rafale needs a runway; the Gripen has been to designed to operate from roads if needed. Its maintenance can be done with limited mechanics in shorter turn-around times and might be a better option in colder conditions as it was designed for arctic conditions.
