Sixteen years ago, engineers working on the Google self-driving project conducted their first autonomous vehicle test on the freeway connecting Silicon Valley to San Francisco. The company would eventually become Waymo, expanding autonomous vehicle testing – spreading to other cities. Eventually, the company launched commercial robotaxi services in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Other cities soon followed suit. But the freeways, despite some early testing, will remain out of reach. Till today. Waymo said Wednesday it will begin offering robotaxi rides using freeways in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles, a significant expansion for the company that it says will reduce ride times by up to 50%.

Coming up on #KTLA: Waymo robotaxis are finally being given access to LA freeways, which should go totally smoothly because, you know, it's not like the 405 is as intense as a Mad Max movie

What about threat of competition? Clog the streets with your robotaxis to make it harder for others to enter a market. Big tech doesn't seem to care about things like efficiency these days, only market dominance.

This is the crucial difference between Uber/Lyft and robotaxis like Waymo: a robotaxi is an expensive asset that can only generate profit if it is utilized at the highest rate possible. At a basic level the business is built around serving as many rides as possible with as few vehicles as possible.

Waymo Rolls Out Fully Autonomous Freeway Rides in LA, San Francisco, and Phoenix Alphabet's Waymo has achieved a major milestone in autonomous mobility: starting November 12, 2025, its robotaxis are now offering driverless rides on freeways in Los Angeles, San Francisco (and the broader Bay Area), and Phoenix. This expansion, announced Wednesday, allows the service to incorporate highway routes when they're "meaningfully faster," potentially slashing trip times by up to 50% for longer commutes across sprawling metro areas.

Waymo’s Robotaxis Can Now Use the Highway, Speeding Up Longer Trips
When Google's Self-Driving The car project began testing in the Bay Area in 2009, with its engineers focusing on highways by sending their sensor-laden vehicles on Interstate 280, which runs the length of Silicon Valley's peninsula. After more than 15 years, cars are back on the freeways – this time without drivers. On Tuesday, the project, now the Alphabet subsidiary we know as Waymo, announced that its robotaxi service will now run on freeways in the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles and Phoenix. The new service marks another technological leap for Waymo, whose robotaxis currently serve five US metros: Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix and the San Francisco Bay Area.

A serious concern for the elderly and disabled is that robotaxis replace taxis and then there's no-one to help with luggage or entering/exiting the vehicle. It seems to me a mistake to believe they're a benefit for these groups.

There will be benefits but the net effect? I dunno.

Last week I gave a keynote about robotaxis' impact on urban life at the Smart City World Congress in Barcelona. For highlights, see here: www.linkedin.com/posts/david-...

TL;DR: European cities are already great. Adding robotaxis would bring significant risk -- and limited upside.
